Chapter 4 - The Shadow WarBy 8:00 p.m. that evening, a fierce autumn storm had hit Chicago. Torrential rain lashed against the windows of the Vale manor, and thunder rolled across Lake Michigan like heavy artillery.

Inside the estate’s tactical command center—a hidden room behind the wine cellar—Dominic stood over a massive digital map of the city. Red dots flashed across the screen, marking the locations of Moretti’s safehouses, warehouses, and illegal front businesses.

Beside him, Mara sat in a leather chair, her face pale but set in a mask of determination. After the initial wave of terror had passed, she had refused to stay upstairs in her room. If her father’s life was on the line, she wanted to see every strategy, hear every word, and know every risk.

"My men have already secured the nursing facility in Oak Park," Dominic said, pointing to a green icon on the screen. "Your father is safe, Mara. I’ve placed ten of my best armed guards inside the building, disguised as night staff. Moretti’s men won't get within two blocks of him."

Mara let out a long, shaky breath, looking at Dominic with deep gratitude. "Thank you, Dominic. Truly."

"Don't thank me yet," Dominic said grimly. "Moretti isn't trying to negotiate. He’s trying to force me into a mistake. He knows I won't give up the port licenses. The port is the heart of my family’s empire. If I lose the port, I lose the city."

"Then what is he really doing?" Mara asked, her sharp mind analyzing the map. She leaned forward, pointing at three red icons concentrated near the river district. "Look at the timing of his attacks. The West Side warehouse at 2:00 p.m. The delivery trucks at 4:00 p.m. And now his men are gathering near the old grain silos by the river."

Dominic narrowed his eyes, studying the pattern she indicated. "He’s drawing my security forces away from the estate. He wants me to divide my men across the city so he can strike here."

"Exactly," Mara said, her confidence rising as she pieced the puzzle together. "It’s a classic misdirection. At The Meridian, the gunman wasn't trying to shoot you from the bar—he was waiting for you to run toward the kitchen exit where another hitman was waiting. Moretti doesn't attack head-on. He creates a panic and waits for you to walk into his net."

Dominic turned to look at her, a profound look of respect and realization dawning on his face. "You're right. He wants me to send my main force to defend the port, leaving the manor vulnerable."

"So don't give him what he expects," Mara urged softly, standing up to meet his gaze. "Set a trap for him right here."

Dominic stared at her for a long moment, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his handsome face. "You have the mind of a general, Mara Whitfield. A beautiful, brilliant general."

He turned to Marco, his voice booming with authority. "Cancel the perimeter sweeps. Keep sixty percent of our heavy forces hidden inside the estate grounds. Turn off the exterior security floodlights. Let Moretti think he’s successfully drawn my men away. Let him enter the gates."

"Boss," Marco hesitated, "if we let him onto the grounds, you and Miss Whitfield will be in direct danger."

"Moretti wants a war," Dominic said, racking the slide of a heavy black handgun and slipping it into his shoulder holster. "Tonight, we give him one."

An hour later, the lights across the entire Vale estate went black.

The massive mansion sat like a ghost house in the pitch-dark woods, shrouded by the heavy rain and roaring thunder. Inside the grand library, Dominic and Mara stood near the shuttered windows. Dominic wore full tactical gear over his dark clothes, his sidearm drawn and ready. Mara held a heavy steel fireplace poker—she had refused to stay in the panic room, insisting on standing beside him.

Suddenly, the high-pitched screech of tires cut through the storm outside.

Two heavy armored vans crashed through the estate’s front gates, skidding to a halt on the gravel driveway. The doors flew open, and a dozen armed men dressed in dark tactical gear poured out, firing automatic weapons into the mansion's front doors.

Glass shattered. The roar of gunfire filled the night air.

"Stay down!" Dominic ordered, pulling Mara behind the thick mahogany desk as bullets tore through the library windows, shredding the heavy velvet curtains.

Moretti’s men breached the front foyer, shouting orders to clear the ground floor. They thought they were entering an under-defended mansion.

They were dead wrong.

From the dark upper balconies, the hidden tactical team of the Vale family opened fire. The foyer erupted into a chaotic storm of muzzle flashes, shouting, and thunderous crossfire. Dominic’s men executed their trap with military precision, cutting off Moretti’s retreat and trapping his strike force in the center of the hall.

Dominic stood up from behind the desk, his eyes cold and deadly. "Wait here, Mara. I’m ending this."

"Dominic, wait!" Mara cried, grabbing his arm.

He turned, looked down at her face illuminated by the flickering muzzle flashes in the hall, and leaned down to press a fierce, passionate kiss against her lips.

"Stay safe, my sweet waitress," Dominic whispered against her mouth. "I’ll be right back."

He broke away and stepped into the smoke-filled hall, his gun raised, joining the battle that would decide the fate of Chicago’s underworld.
