Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the PastThe black sedan moved silently through the rain-slicked streets of the South End.

Sadie sat huddled in the corner of the plush leather back seat, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket that Roman’s driver, a tall man named Marco, had handed her. Beside her sat Roman, staring out the tinted window at the neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

In her lap, Sadie clutched her canvas bag, her fingers wrapped tightly around the plastic baby bottle inside.

“412 East 5th Street,” Sadie whispered her address to the driver, her voice trembling. “It’s... it’s the brick building at the end of the alley.”

Roman didn't look at her, but his jaw tightened slightly. “A district run by the Moretti family.”

Sadie tensed. “I don't know anything about families or gangs, Mr. Gallo. I just know the rent is cheap enough for me to survive.”

“It’s cheap because Sal Moretti squeezes the landlords, who in turn cut the heat and let the stairwells rot,” Roman said softly. “You shouldn't be living there with a child.”

“I don't have a choice!” Sadie snapped, a burst of defensive anger rising through her fog of exhaustion. “I don't have a wealthy estate or a fleet of black cars, Mr. Gallo! I work with what I have!”

Roman turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto hers in the dim interior of the car. There was no anger in his expression—only a deep, ancient weight that made her breath catch.

“Choices are a luxury for people who aren't drowning, Sadie,” he murmured. “I am not judging you. I am stating a fact.”

The car pulled up to the curb outside 412 East 5th Street. The building was dark, its rusted fire escapes dripping rainwater onto the street below.

Roman opened his door, stepping out into the light drizzle before reaching back in to offer Sadie his hand. She hesitated for a second before placing her small, calloused palm in his broad, warm grip.

They walked up the narrow stairs to Apartment 2B. Sadie knocked on the peeling green door.

A moment later, the door opened a crack, held by a heavy brass chain. Mrs. Gable, a gaunt woman with graying hair and a cigarette dangling from her lip, squinted out at them.

“Sadie? You’re late,” Mrs. Gable grumbled. “You said eleven o'clock. It’s past midnight. That’s another twenty dollars—”

She froze as her eyes drifted behind Sadie, landing on the towering figure of Roman Gallo standing in the dimly lit hallway. The cigarette nearly fell from her lips.

“M-Mr. Gallo...” Mrs. Gable stammered, her voice suddenly high and terrified. “I... I didn't know...”

Sadie looked between them, confused. “You know him?”

“Everyone in this borough knows who owns the streets, child,” Mrs. Gable whispered, hurriedly unhooking the chain and opening the door wide.

Inside the small, cluttered living room, two-year-old Finn was fast asleep on a worn sofa, wrapped in a faded blue blanket, his thumb tucked securely into his mouth.

At the sight of her baby, all the tension and exhaustion in Sadie’s body seemed to melt away. She rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside the sofa, gently pressing her cheek against her son’s soft, warm hair. Tears filled her eyes.

“Hey, baby,” she whispered softly, kissing his small forehead. “Mama’s here.”

Roman stood in the doorway, his massive frame filling the small entrance. He watched the young mother hold her child, his dark eyes observing the absolute, raw devotion in her movements. Something softened in his rigid posture—a fleeting shadow of humanity beneath his dangerous exterior.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a thick wad of bills, and handed five hundred dollars to Mrs. Gable without saying a word.

The old woman gasped, clutching the money to her chest. “Thank you, sir! Thank you!”

Roman walked over to the sofa, crouching beside Sadie. He reached down with his large, calloused hand and gently lifted the sleeping boy into his arms, wrapping the faded blanket securely around him. Finn stirred slightly, resting his small head against Roman’s broad shoulder, completely untroubled by the dangerous man holding him.

Roman looked at Sadie. “Gather his things. You aren't staying here tonight.”
