Chapter 4 - The War in the StreetsThe lobby of the Dirksen Federal Building was quiet at 2:00 AM, illuminated only by security lights and the soft glow of metal detectors.

District Attorney Arthur Vance—a tired-looking man in his fifties with wire-rimmed glasses—stood near the security desk, flanked by six federal marshals with drawn weapons. He watched in absolute disbelief as Dawson Moretti, the heir to Chicago’s most dangerous crime family, walked through the front doors, holding hands with a bruised, soot-covered woman in a torn suit.
Dawson didn't reach for a weapon. He raised his hands slowly, stepping through the metal detector.
"Vance," Dawson said, his voice ringing through the cavernous marble lobby. "I’m here to make a delivery."
Arthur Vance stepped forward, his eyes narrow and suspicious. "Dawson Moretti. You've got half the police department searching for you. The Moretti Tower is currently a active warzone. Why shouldn't I lock you in a federal holding cell right now?"
Dawson reached into his coat pocket. The marshals raised their guns, but Dawson slowly pulled out a blood-stained leather binder and set it on the security counter, alongside the silver flash drive he had snatched back from the steam cloud.
"In that binder is the full financial record of the Moretti syndicate," Dawson said flatly. "Offshore accounts, police bribes, dock smuggling routes, and the political network my father built over forty years. On that flash drive are the private communication logs of Viktor Volkov and his Russian Bratva network."
Vance stared at the binder, then at Dawson. "What's the catch? You don't just hand over your family's keys out of the goodness of your heart."
"My father is dead," Dawson said, a flicker of pain crossing his eyes before he hardened his expression. "Viktor Volkov launched a coup tonight. He’s taking over the city using Russian mercenaries. In exchange for this evidence, I want full federal immunity for Sienna Brooks. A clean record, a new identity if she wants it, and total protection."
"And what about you?" Vance asked.
"I don't care what you do with me," Dawson replied quietly. "Just keep her safe."
Sienna turned to him, horrified. "Dawson, no! You can't do this! You promised we would leave together!"
"Sienna," Dawson said, turning to her and taking both her hands in his. His eyes were softer than she had ever seen them. "If I go with you right now, Volkov’s men will hunt us to the end of the earth. The only way you ever get a normal life—the life you deserve—is if Volkov is erased and the syndicate is broken. I have to finish this."
"I'm not leaving you!" she cried, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't survive a mob war just to let you hand yourself over to the feds!"
"Mr. Moretti," DA Vance interrupted, reviewing the files on a laptop one of his agents had brought over. His eyes were wide with shock. "This data... it’s legitimate. This isn't just Moretti business; this links three sitting city councilmen and two state senators to organized crime. But if we use this, Volkov will know within the hour. He has informants in the state police."
"Then don't use the state police," Dawson said, a lethal smile touching his lips. "Use me. Volkov thinks I'm fleeing the city. He’s converging his remaining forces at the North Harbor docks to secure his escape route to Canada. If you move a federal SWAT team in right now, you can trap his entire leadership in one net."
"And why would Volkov stay at the docks?" Vance asked.
"Because I'm going to be there," Dawson said. "And Volkov won't leave Chicago until he sees my body."
"No!" Sienna screamed, grabbing his tactical vest. "It’s a trap! Dawson, he has thirty mercenaries! You're walking into an ambush!"
Dawson pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply, fiercely, blocking out the marshals, the cold lobby, and the storm raging outside. It was a kiss full of rain, blood, promises, and an undeniable, burning love that had bloomed in the darkest corner of the city.
When he pulled back, his eyes were burning with absolute determination. "Trust me, Sienna. I’m not the untrained kid who threw a tantrum at the Onyx Lounge anymore. You gave me something to live for. Now watch me fight for it."
He looked at Vance. "Give me two hours. Keep her in federal custody until the docks are clear."
Before Sienna could stop him, Dawson turned and walked out of the federal building into the pouring rain, where Marcus was waiting in the idling SUV.
For the next ninety minutes, Sienna sat in a private glass office on the eighth floor of the federal building, staring at the clock on the wall. Every second felt like an eternity. She refused coffee, she refused medical treatment for her bruised ankle; she simply sat, her hands tightly clasped, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to in years.
At 3:45 AM, the door opened. DA Vance walked in, holding a satellite communications receiver. His face was grim, covered in fresh rain.
"Is he... is he alive?" Sienna asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Vance took off his glasses, wiping them with a handkerchief. "The raid on North Harbor was a success. Federal agents, supported by Coast Guard units, hit Building 4 twenty minutes ago. Volkov’s entire leadership team has been captured or eliminated. The Russian Bratva network in Chicago has been completely dismantled."
Sienna stood up, her heart pounding in her throat. "Where is Dawson?"
Vance sighed heavily. "Dawson engaged Volkov personally inside Warehouse B. Volkov was shot and killed. But... there was a structural explosion during the firefight. The warehouse roof collapsed into the harbor."
Sienna felt her knees give out. The world turned black around the edges. "No... no, no, no..."

"Federal divers are at the scene right now," Vance said softly, offering a hand to steady her. "Miss Brooks, I'm so sorry."
Sienna didn't scream. She didn't cry. A terrible, hollow silence filled her soul. She looked out the window at the storm clearing over Lake Michigan, feeling as though her heart had been ripped from her chest and thrown into the icy dark water.
