Chapter 4 - The Counter-StrikeAt 2:30 PM, the confrontation moved from the boardroom to the real world.

Christopher’s private security detail escorted Sarah to the elementary school on the east side of Columbus ten minutes before the final bell rang. The rain had washed the streets clean, leaving the afternoon flooded with bright autumn sunlight.
As Sarah walked up the concrete steps of the school, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up illegally in the red zone directly in front of the main entrance.
The passenger door swung open, and Evelyn Kane stepped out, looking furious and desperate, her silver-blond hair slightly disheveled. Behind her, two local men in cheap suits—private investigators hired by the Kanes—hurried to keep pace.
"Sarah! Stop right there!" Evelyn called out, marching up the steps.
Sarah turned, her spine straightening. The trembling in her hands had vanished. The fear that had paralyzed her for four years had burned away, replaced by the fierce, protective instinct of a mother guarding her cub.
"Stay away from me, Evelyn," Sarah said, her voice ringing clear across the schoolyard.
"You arrogant little fool," Evelyn hissed, stopping two feet away. Her face was twisted with hatred. "Do you have any idea what you've done? You've destroyed generations of work! Trevor is ruined—unless you sign the custody waiver right now and drop the federal charges, I will make sure you never see Owen again. I have a court order right here—"
She reached into her designer handbag, pulling out a sheaf of papers.
Before Evelyn could unfold them, two towering men in dark suits stepped out from behind the school pillars, effectively blocking her path. Marcus Vance stepped forward beside them, holding a slim leather folder.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Kane," Marcus said smoothly. "I’m Marcus Vance, general counsel for Hale Hospitality and legal representative for Ms. Sarah Carter."
Evelyn glared at him. "I don't care who you are. This is a local custody dispute—"
"Actually, it’s not," Marcus interrupted, opening his folder and pulling out a stamped federal document. "This is a federal restraining order issued twenty minutes ago by Judge Thomas Sterling of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. It bars you, Trevor Kane, and any designated agents from approaching Ms. Carter, her son, or her place of employment under penalty of immediate incarceration."
Evelyn stared at the paper, her face turning the color of ash. "That’s impossible... a federal judge wouldn't—"
"Judge Sterling reviewed our forensic audit of your family’s municipal bond embezzlement scheme before lunch," Marcus replied with a chilly smile. "He was remarkably thorough."
At that exact moment, the school doors flew open, and a flood of children spilled out onto the concrete steps.
Among them came eight-year-old Owen, missing his front tooth, wearing a blue backpack covered in iron-on patches of rockets and planets. When he spotted Sarah standing by the pillar, his face lit up.
"Mom!" he shouted, running past Evelyn and the private investigators as if they didn't exist.
Sarah dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide just as Owen crashed into her chest, wrapping his small arms tightly around her neck.
"Hey, buddy," Sarah whispered, burying her face in his hair, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. "Did you have a good day at school?"
"The best! We built a volcano in science class!" Owen chirped, pulling back and looking up at the group of well-dressed adults standing around them. He noticed Christopher standing quietly a few feet away. "Hey! You're the guy who bought soup at Mom's diner yesterday!"
Christopher smiled, walking over and crouching down to Owen’s eye level. "Guilty as charged. I hear you're into rockets and space."
"I am!" Owen said proudly. "When I grow up, I'm going to build a real one that goes to Mars."
"Well, you're going to need a top-tier aerospace engineering sponsor for that," Christopher said, looking up at Sarah, whose eyes shone with unshed tears and profound, quiet gratitude. "I happen to know a few people in Boston who fund those exact projects."
Evelyn watched them, completely sidelined, her power dissolved into nothingness. She looked at the private investigators she had paid thousands of dollars to bring along; both men were already backing away toward their Mercedes, eager to distance themselves from a collapsing federal case.

"This isn't over," Evelyn spat, her voice shaking with rage as she turned back toward her car. "Trevor will fight this to the Supreme Court!"
"Tell Trevor I look forward to his appeal," Christopher called out without turning around, his hand resting reassuringly on Sarah’s shoulder as mother and son stood together in the afternoon sun.
