Part 3: The Gathering Storm

Ethan didn't sign the papers.

Instead, he spent the next three hours in a secluded corner of the hospital’s cafeteria, flanked by a trusted private investigator named Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian), whom Ethan had hired through an independent firm outside his corporate network.

Marcus slammed a thick manila folder onto the plastic table. "It’s worse than you think, Ethan. Julian and Victoria haven't just been shifting funds to secure the Bellevue loan. They’ve been skimming from the secondary accounts for over a year."

Ethan rubbed his eyes, the caffeine from his fourth cup of stale coffee doing nothing to clear the fog in his brain. "Show me."

Marcus opened the folder, revealing a series of offshore bank statements and encrypted transaction logs.

"They used your digital signature keys," Marcus explained, pointing to the authorization column. "Every time you were traveling for international site selections, Victoria was approving transfers. They didn't just freeze Mara's account to help the company; they froze it because they had already emptied a significant portion of it into their own shell corporations. They knew that if Mara went to a high-end clinic, the financial audit would trigger an automated alert to your primary legal team. They had to keep her away from the system to hide the theft."

Ethan felt a cold fury settle deep into his bones. It was no longer a corporate dispute. It was criminal. They had put Mara’s life in jeopardy to cover up a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme.

"Can we prove it?" Ethan asked, his voice steadying into a dangerous rhythm.

"The digital trail is obscured, but there's a loophole," Marcus said, leaning in. "The master server that holds the unencrypted IP logs for those digital signatures is located inside your downtown corporate headquarters—specifically in Julian’s private office safe. He keeps a physical backup drive because he doesn't trust cloud storage for his illicit data. If we get that drive, we have them both dead to rights on fraud, embezzlement, and reckless endangerment."

"The board meeting is in an hour," Ethan said, checking his watch. 9:00 AM. "They think they are going to walk into that room and vote me out using the incapacity clause."

"Are you going to fight them for the chair?" Marcus asked.

Ethan stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. The exhaustion that had weighed him down for hours evaporated, replaced by a singular, burning purpose.

"No," Ethan said grimly. "I’m going to let them think they’ve won. I want them entirely comfortable when the trap springs."

He walked back upstairs to Mara’s room. Oliver was awake now, sitting on the edge of his mother’s bed, holding her uninjured hand while she softly stroked his hair. The sight pierced Ethan’s heart, but it also gave him the strength he needed for the battle ahead.

He walked over and kissed Oliver on the head, then looked at Mara. "I have to handle something downtown. I’ll be back by afternoon. I’ve hired private security to stand outside this door. No one gets in except the doctors. Do you trust me?"

Mara looked at him for a long moment, searching his eyes for the distant, distracted man he used to be. Finding someone else instead, she nodded slowly. "Bring our boy home, Ethan."

"I will," he said. "I promise."
