Chapter 4 - The Rat Trap

By 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning, the dark mahogany conference room at our corporate headquarters in Midtown Manhattan was filled with the senior captains of the Vance crime syndicate.
My brother, Carlo, sat at the head of the table to my right, his graying hair pulled back, his heavy gold signet ring clicking nervously against his glass of whiskey. He looked devastated, his eyes rimmed with red.
To my left sat Dominic Christopher Moretti, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a black tie of mourning. He sat with his hands folded neatly on the table, looking like a devoted son-in-law consumed by grief.
The remaining eight captains sat in absolute silence. Outside the room, sixteen armed guards stood watch in the hallway.
I stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of iced water.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," I said, my voice echoing through the silent room. "As you all know... my daughter, Isabella, passed away early this morning at St. Mary's Hospital."
A low murmur of condolences rippled through the room. Dominic bowed his head solemnly, dabbing his eyes with a dark handkerchief.
"We are currently searching for the cowards responsible," I continued smoothly, pacing behind Carlo’s chair. "Our preliminary investigation showed that the attackers left a clear message on her body. A message designed to make me believe that someone sitting at this very table was a traitor."
Dominic’s head snapped up slightly. His eyes darted toward Carlo, then quickly back to me.
"Victor," Dominic spoke up, his voice filled with practiced concern. "If there is a rat in our inner circle, we need to know. We cannot allow Isabella’s memory to be compromised by internal politics. If someone here betrayed us... you must execute them today."
Carlo turned his head, glaring fiercely at Dominic. "Watch your tongue, kid. We are grieving a princess of this family. Don't use her death to settle your political grudges."
"I am her husband, Carlo!" Dominic snapped back, his voice rising with dramatic anger. "I have more right to demand justice than anyone in this room! Victor, show us what you found!"
I stopped behind Dominic’s chair. I placed both of my hands firmly on his shoulders.
Dominic stiffened slightly under my heavy touch, but maintained his composure.
"Dominic is right," I said softly to the room. "Justice must be swift. In fact, our intelligence team uncovered something very interesting two hours ago. We intercepted an encrypted transmission sent from a satellite phone inside this building, directed straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s field office on Plaza Street."
Dominic’s jaw twitched. Just a fraction of a millimeter. But I felt the muscle spasm beneath my palms.
"The transmission," I continued, "contained full master access codes to our offshore Swiss clearing accounts, along with a draft for a sweeping federal RICO indictment set to be unsealed at noon today."
The captains gasped. Guns were drawn instantly around the table as men looked at each other with pure, wild suspicion.
"Who sent it, Boss?!" one captain roared, slamming his fist on the table. "Give us the name!"
I leaned down close to Dominic’s ear, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried across the microphone array embedded in the ceiling.
"Tell them who sent it, Dominic," I whispered.
Dominic tried to stand up, but my hands slammed down on his shoulders like steel clamps, pinning him into his leather chair.
"Victor! What are you doing?!" Dominic yelled, his face turning pale. "Are you out of your mind?! I'm your son-in-law!"
"You're a federal informant, Dominic," I said coldly. "Serial number 884-Delta. Assigned to Special Agent Robert Miller. You've been feeding them financial ledgers for five years."
"That's a lie!" Dominic shrieked, looking frantically around the table at the drawn weapons of the captains. "He's lost his mind from grief! Carlo framed me! Look at Carlo’s office! Check his files!"
I pulled my phone from my pocket and pressed play on an audio file recorded twenty minutes ago from the wiretap we had installed in his penthouse.
Dominic’s own voice echoed loud and clear through the conference room speakers:
[Audio Recording]: "Agent Miller, this is Moretti. The old man swallowed the bait. He thinks Carlo killed Isabella. By noon today, Victor will have executed Carlo, and the entire family structure will explode. Unseal the indictments and send the tactical teams to the docks. I want my immunity papers signed before sunset."
The conference room descended into absolute, deafening silence.
Dominic stared at the phone in terror. His tears were gone. His grief was gone. All that remained was the hollow, terrified face of a trapped rat.
Carlo slowly stood up from his chair, his eyes burning with a dark, murderous fury. He pulled a heavy silver scalpels—the very medical tool Dominic had stolen from his kit—and set it down on the table right in front of Dominic’s face.
"You touched my niece," Carlo growled, his voice trembling with rage. "You carved your filth into her back... and you tried to make her father kill me."
Dominic swallowed hard, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Victor... please... you can't touch me! The FBI has this building surrounded! If I don't walk out of here by 11:30, tactical teams will breach!"
I smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that made every man in that room step back.

"Let them breach, Dominic," I said softly. "They're going to find a very clean room. Because you aren't dying here."
I looked at Marco. "Take him to the sub-basement. My daughter wants to watch him sign his confession."
