Chapter 3 - The Vault in ZurichThirty-six hours later, my private jet touched down on the tarmac of Zurich Airport under a grey, misting sky. I had brought Clara and Nicolette with us, protected by a team of twelve heavily armed security operatives disguised as private executive staff. Leaving them in Boston was too dangerous; Victor’s reach inside the city was extensive, but here, in the neutral territory of Swiss banking, we had a temporary tactical advantage.

We arrived at the prestigious Bankverein von Sankt Gallen, an ancient institution built like a fortress of granite and bronze. The managing director, an elderly man named Herr Schmidt who had personally managed my father's private accounts, greeted us in a private subterranean boardroom.

"Mr. Duca," Schmidt said, bowing respectfully. "It has been fifteen years since your father's death. Per his strict instructions, account 884-Delta could only be accessed if the physical key was presented alongside the biological bloodline of a Duca heir and the verified witness."

Clara stepped forward. She unclasped the black-and-gold pendant from her neck. Using a small silver tool provided by Marco, I pressed a hidden release mechanism on the back of the pendant. With a soft click, the onyx face parted, revealing a tiny, intricate micro-key crafted from titanium.

Schmidt took the key and led us deeper into the bank’s vault system, passing through three reinforced steel security gates until we reached a wall of heavy metal safe boxes. He inserted his master key into box 884-Delta, and I inserted the titanium micro-key.

Together, we turned them. Heavy tumblers clunked open.

Inside lay a single leather-bound ledger, aged but pristine, alongside a digital hard drive sealed in an airtight glass container.

I carefully lifted the ledger and opened the first page. My father's elegant handwriting filled the pages, detailing every meeting, every secret wire transfer, and every treasonous act committed by Victor Valenti leading up to the fateful night of the massacre. But it was the digital hard drive that held the ultimate piece of evidence.

"What's on the drive?" Clara asked, leaning close.

"Audio recordings," I said, my blood running cold as I read my father's attached note. "Victor didn't just plan the ambush. He recorded his negotiations with the rival syndicates to ensure they wouldn't double-cross him. He kept a digital archive as blackmail against his own co-conspirators."

"Then this is enough to destroy him," Clara whispered, relief washing over her face. "You can hand this over to the federal authorities. You don't have to fight a blood war."

"Federal authorities can be bought, Clara," I said grimly. "In our world, justice isn't handed down by a judge in a robe. It is delivered by the Syndicate Council. I am calling an emergency meeting of the High Families in New York."

Suddenly, the red emergency light in the vault hallway began to flash, and a muted siren echoed through the thick concrete walls.

Schmidt’s face lost all color. "That is the main security breach alarm! Someone is forcing their way into the lower lobby!"

"Marco!" I shouted, drawing my concealed firearm from beneath my tailored coat. "Positioning!"

Within seconds, the heavy iron doors at the end of the vault corridor were blown off their hinges with a deafening explosion. Smoke and dust billowed through the air as four masked mercenaries clad in tactical gear charged into the hallway, firing silenced automatic rifles.

"Get Clara and the child behind the vault door!" I roared, returning fire.

My shots struck the lead mercenary in the chest, sending him crashing backward against the granite wall. Marco and my security team formed a defensive perimeter, lay down suppressive fire, and drove the attackers back into the bottleneck of the hallway.

"They tracked our flight!" Marco yelled over the gunfire. "Victor knew we were coming to Zurich!"

"He didn't track the flight, Marco," I said, reloading my weapon with practiced precision. "He monitored the bank's internal network notification! Schmidt!"

I grabbed the elderly bank director by his collar, dragging him out of the line of fire. "Who did you notify when I called ahead for access?"

"N-nobody!" Schmidt stuttered, trembling violently. "Only the senior board members!"

"One of your board members belongs to Victor," I snarled.

I grabbed the leather ledger and the sealed hard drive, stuffing them into my coat pocket. I turned to Clara, who was crouching behind a steel pillar, holding Nicolette tightly against her chest. The child was crying softly, her small hands covering her ears.

"Clara, look at me!" I commanded, my voice cutting through her panic. "Do you trust me?"

She looked up, terror in her eyes, but when she saw the calm, unwavering resolve in my face, she nodded slowly. "I trust you, Lorenzo."

"We move through the old emergency exit behind the primary vault," I told my team. "We hit them hard, break out to the parking garage, and get to the backup vehicles. No one touches this woman or her child today!"
