Chapter 6 - Dawn Over Ashford House

By sunrise, the storm had completely cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant Chicago morning that reflected blindingly off the wet slate roofs of the Ashford estate.

The twenty-three captains had departed long before dawn, their loyalty hastily re-pledged and the false war charter quietly burned in the chapel fireplace. Margaret Ashford was gone—permanently retired to a secluded, heavily guarded estate in upstate New York where she would never again pose a threat to anyone.

Inside the sunlit east courtyard, Evelyn Carter was busy watering the potted hydrangeas near the garden wall, breathing in the fresh, clean scent of damp earth and pine.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind her.

She turned to see Gabriel Ashford walking toward her, holding a steaming mug of black coffee in one hand and a crisp, official document in the other. He looked tired, the dark circles under his eyes hinting at a sleepless night, but there was an unmistakable lightness in his posture—a quiet peace that hadn't existed twenty-four hours earlier.

"Morning, Evelyn," Gabriel said, offering a small, genuine smile as he handed her the coffee.

"Good morning, Mr. Ashford," Evelyn replied, wiping her hands on her apron before taking the mug. "I take it the family meeting went well?"

"Let's just say the Ashford family is experiencing a significant restructuring of upper management," Gabriel chuckled softly, leaning against the stone wall. He extended the official document toward her. "Julian is taking a long, permanent vacation in Europe to manage our overseas shipping assets. Which leaves a rather substantial vacancy in the executive administration of this estate."

Evelyn looked down at the paper. It wasn't just a promotion; it was a complete reclassification of her role, naming her the Director of Estate Operations, complete with a salary that would securely pay for Lucy’s private schooling and a permanent home of their own.

"Mr. Ashford... I'm just a maid," Evelyn said, though her heart swelled with quiet pride.

"You're the only person in this entire city who knows how to listen to the sounds everyone else ignores," Gabriel corrected gently, his dark eyes meeting hers with absolute respect. "And quite frankly, Evelyn... you're the only one around here who knows which bell to pull when the house starts to sink."

Evelyn looked down at the document, then out across the sprawling, sunlit gardens where Lucy was already chasing a butterfly near the fountain.

For the first time since she had walked through the iron gates of Ashford House, Evelyn felt like she wasn't just working inside someone else's secrets—she was finally helping to build a future.
