Chapter 4 - The War Room and the PlaygroundBy sunrise, the Chicago media had already begun to self-destruct.

Every major news outlet, financial blog, and gossip rag was running the same headline in screaming capital letters: MILLION-DOLLAR ENGAGEMENT EXPLODES: DANIEL MERCER DUMPS VICTORIA LANGSTON FOR MYSTERY WOMAN.

By 9:00 AM, the lobby of the Mercer Tower was besieged by paparazzi, television crews, and desperate PR representatives trying to salvage the Langston banking alliance.

Up on the forty-first floor, however, the world was peaceful.

Sofia sat cross-legged on the plush white rug of the master suite living room, surrounded by an enormous pile of building blocks that Daniel had apparently had security source from a high-end toy boutique at 3:00 AM.

Maria stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, wrapped in a silk bathrobe, sipping black coffee, watching the swarming reporters three hundred feet below like ants on an anthill.

The double doors opened without a knock.

Daniel walked in carrying two briefcases and a steaming cup of espresso. He looked entirely unfazed by the media apocalypse unfolding outside his front door.

“Morning,” Daniel greeted, tossing his suit jacket onto the sofa.

“Your lobby looks like a war zone,” Maria said, not turning around from the window. “CNN is broadcasting live from the revolving doors. They’re calling me ‘The Mysterious Cinderella of Pilsen.’”

Daniel chuckled, walking over to stand beside her, looking out at the city skyline. “Let them talk. By noon, my legal team will release the official press statement.”

Maria turned her head, looking up at him suspiciously. “What statement?”

“That Daniel Mercer is officially engaged to Maria Reyes, and that any media outlet printing defamatory stories about her or her daughter will face a corporate lawsuit large enough to buy their parent company before lunch.”

Maria set her coffee cup down with a sharp clink. “Daniel, we haven't even discussed this! You can’t just announce to the world that we’re getting married! I’m your employee—well, former employee—I’m a single mother from a working-class neighborhood—!”

“You’re an intelligent, capable woman with a degree in accounting from UIC that you had to put on hold because you got pregnant and abandoned by a coward,” Daniel interrupted calmly, rattling off her personal history as if he had memorized her resume.

Maria’s breath hitched. “How do you...?”

“I told you, Maria. I know who works in my buildings,” Daniel said, his gray eyes turning serious. “And as for the engagement, it’s not a joke. It’s a protection pact. The moment Victoria and her father realize they’ve been publicly cast out, they’re going to try to hit back. They’ll try to smear your name, dig into your past, and find any way to humiliate you to save their own social standing.”

He stepped closer, resting his hand lightly on her shoulder.

“If you’re standing beside me as my equal, as my chosen partner, nobody in this city will ever dare touch you or Sofia again,” Daniel said quietly. “They won't just be afraid of me. They’ll respect you.”

Before Maria could formulate a response, a small, sticky hand tugged on the hem of Daniel’s tailored trousers.

Both adults looked down.

Sofia stood there holding a red plastic block shaped like a castle turret, her big brown eyes looking up at Daniel with total, uncritical adoration.

“Mr. Daniel,” Sofia lisped seriously. “The dragon is stuck in the tower. You have to save him.”

Daniel Mercer, the most feared man in the Chicago underworld, the billionaire titan who had just brought a trillion-dollar banking family to its knees with a single sentence, looked down at the plastic toy.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Daniel dropped straight back down onto the expensive white rug, cross-legged, took the red block from Sofia’s hand, and said with absolute gravity, “Lead the way, General Sofia. We’ll mount a rescue mission immediately.”

Maria watched them—the ruthless billionaire and her three-year-old daughter—building a fortress out of plastic bricks in the middle of a penthouse suite while the media burned outside.

Slowly, the heavy knot of fear in her chest began to unwind.

She walked over, sat down on the rug beside them, and picked up a yellow block.
