Chapter 5 - The Fall of the ArrogantThe silence in the hallway was so absolute that you could hear the distant beep of an ICU monitor down the hall.

Hale turned entirely pale. His breath caught in his throat, and he stumbled backward a half-step, colliding with the edge of the conference room door.

“M-Majority shareholder?” Hale whispered, shaking his head in frantic denial. “No... that’s impossible. He’s... he’s wearing a janitor’s uniform! He carries a mop!”

“I carry a mop because I wanted to see what kind of men run my hospital when they think nobody important is watching,” I said, stepping forward, my voice dropping its submissive tone and replacing it with the cold, commanding authority of a seasoned executive.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the gray uniform badge, and tossed it onto the floor at Hale’s feet.

Melissa Crane rushed out of the conference room, her face drained of all color. “Director Vance, this must be some kind of misunderstanding! We’ve increased department revenues by twenty percent this year—!”

“You increased revenues by falsifying insurance claims, reusing single-use surgical implants, and threatening nursing staff who refused to participate in your criminal conspiracy,” I interrupted, pulling the flash drive from my pocket and placing it on the nearest table.

Director Vance stepped forward, signaling to two private security officers who had quietly appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Dr. Victor Hale and Melissa Crane, you are both suspended indefinitely pending a full federal audit and criminal investigation,” Director Vance announced, his voice ringing with finality. “Escort them off the premises immediately.”

“You can’t do this!” Hale screamed, lunging forward before the security guards grabbed his arms. “I am the chief of surgery! You’re ruining my career over a disgruntled—!”

“You ruined your own career the moment you decided that human lives were just line items on a fraudulent balance sheet,” I said quietly, watching as they were dragged down the corridor.

As the elevator doors closed on Hale’s panicked face, the remaining board members stood in stunned silence, realizing that the era of corruption at St. Catherine was officially over.
