Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of Floor Twenty-ThreeBy noon, the immediate shock wave that had rocked the twenty-third floor began to settle into a new, unfamiliar reality.

The operations suite was quiet, but it was no longer tense. The heavy, suffocating atmosphere of fear that had hung over the cubicles for months had evaporated, replaced by a cautious, wide-eyed sense of relief.

Daniel Anderson stood near the central walkway, chatting quietly with Arthur Pendelton as two IT technicians worked inside Zach Keller’s former office, packing his desktop hard drives into anti-static evidence bags.

Riley walked over to the secondary conference room.

Martha Evans was sitting at the long glass table, a clean microfiber cloth held loosely in her hands. She looked completely overwhelmed, her eyes wide as she stared at the door.

Riley stepped inside, closing the glass door gently behind her.

"Martha?"

Martha looked up, standing up so fast she almost knocked her chair over. "Miss... Miss Anderson—"

"Riley," Riley corrected with a soft smile, stepping forward and reaching out to take Martha’s hands in hers. "My name is Riley."

Martha looked down at their joined hands, then up at the high-end navy suit jacket Riley was still wearing over her gray custodian uniform.

"You... you're the owner's daughter," Martha said, her voice cracking with emotion. "All week... you were pushing the mop. You were lifting those heavy trash liners. You let him... you let him do that to you..."

"I needed to see it, Martha," Riley said gently. "If I had walked in here as the Chairman’s daughter with a clipboard and a legal team, they would have shown me clean floors and polite managers. I needed to see what happened to you. What happened to David. What happened to everyone who didn't have a voice upstairs."

Tears welling in her tired eyes, Martha shook her head. "I didn't help you yesterday, honey. I told you to keep your head down. I told you not to fight."

"You put burn cream on my chest, Martha," Riley said softly, her thumb gently stroking the back of the older woman's hand. "You held my wrist when I was hurting, and you tried to protect me from a man who had the power to fire you. That wasn't keeping your head down. That was kindness."

The door to the conference room opened softly.

Daniel Anderson walked in. He looked at Martha, his expression solemn, respectful, and completely devoid of executive arrogance.

"Mrs. Evans," Daniel said quietly.

Martha wiped a tear from her cheek with her apron. "Mr. Anderson."

"My daughter has told me a great deal about you over the last forty-eight hours," Daniel said, walking over to stand beside Riley. "Specifically, about your twelve years of service to this building, your attendance record, and the fact that our current third-tier corporate health plan has failed to cover your basic medical needs."

Martha lowered her head. "I do my best, sir."

"Your best has been far better than this company deserved," Daniel said firmly. He looked at Riley, nodding once.

Riley pulled a thick, official envelope from the pocket of her father’s suit jacket and handed it to Martha.

"What's this?" Martha asked, her fingers trembling as she opened the flap.

"That," Riley explained, "is an official appointment letter. As of this morning, AMG is establishing a new regional worker advocacy and compliance panel. It’s an independent oversight body that reports directly to the Chairman’s office, with total authority to audit floor conditions, review HR decisions, and approve facilities spending."

Martha blinked, looking at the black print on the heavy cream paper. "I don't... I don't understand."

"We need a Director of Floor Operations Oversight," Daniel said, a warm smile finally breaking across his face. "Someone who knows every pipe in this building. Someone who knows what the workers actually need. Someone who isn't afraid to tell me when my managers are lying to me."

He stepped closer, offering his hand to the older woman.

"The salary is ninety-five thousand a year, Mrs. Evans. Full tier-one executive health coverage, effective immediately. Retrospective pension adjustments for your last twelve years. And an office on twenty-three."

Martha stared at Daniel’s hand. Then she looked at the document. Then she looked at Riley.

A choked, breathless sound escaped her throat as she covered her mouth with her hands, tears finally spilling freely down her face.

"I... I don't know what to say..." Martha sobbed softly.

"Say you'll accept," Riley smiled, wrapping her arms around the older woman’s shoulders in a tight, protective hug. "Because David Park is already downstairs waiting to show you the new facilities budget."
