Chapter 5 - Awakening in Coyoacán

Three weeks later, the afternoon sun in Coyoacán felt warmer, brighter, and more alive than any sunlight Rodrigo had ever known.

The private room at the rehabilitation clinic in San Ángel was filled with the soft scent of fresh white lilies and eucalyptus leaves. Outside the window, jacaranda trees dropped their purple petals onto the quiet colonial street below.

Rodrigo sat in a comfortable armchair beside the adjustable hospital bed, gently rocking a small, warm bundle wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

Little Mateo was thriving. His birth weight had normalized, his dark, curly hair was growing in thick and soft, and his bright eyes—the exact shade of Elena’s—blinked up at his father with a sleepy, contented curiosity.

“Who’s a brave little guy?” Rodrigo whispered softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the baby’s forehead, his voice thick with uncontainable emotion. “Who’s the strongest little man in all of Mexico? That’s right, you are.”

A soft, rustling sound came from the bed.

Rodrigo froze. He looked down instantly.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered.

For weeks, she had remained trapped in the twilight zone of the drug-induced coma, her body fighting off the lingering toxins while her mind slowly clawed its way back to the surface. But today, the heavy shadows under her eyes were gone. Her chest rose and fell in a steady, natural rhythm.

She slowly turned her head toward him, her dry lips parting in a quiet, hesitant breath.

“Rodrigo…?”

The word was barely a whisper, fragile as spun glass, but to Rodrigo, it sounded like the ringing of cathedral bells.

He stood up carefully, still holding Mateo securely in one arm, and leaned over the bed, his free hand reaching out to cup her pale cheek. Tears spilled over his eyelashes, hot and fast, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated grace.

“I’m here, my love,” Rodrigo choked out, his voice breaking completely. “I’m right here. I’ve got you.”

Elena’s gaze drifted downward, locking onto the small bundle cradled against his chest. Her eyes widened, shimmering with a sudden, overwhelming wave of recognition and fierce maternal instinct.

“Mateo…?” she breathed, her fingers trembling as she raised a weak hand toward the baby.

Rodrigo gently guided her arms, placing their son safely into her embrace.

For a long time, neither of them spoke. The room dissolved around them, leaving only the sound of their breathing, the steady tick of the clock, and the miracle of a family that had walked through the gates of hell and somehow found their way back to the light.

“He looks like you,” Elena whispered, a tear carving a clean path down her cheek as she kissed the baby’s tiny hand. “He has your eyes.”

“No,” Rodrigo smiled, leaning down to kiss them both, his heart finally whole. “He has your strength.”
