Chapter 6 - A New Balance

Three months later, the Newport mansion looked entirely different. The scorched west wing had been completely restored, the shattered windows replaced with reinforced glass, and the armed patrols outside had been quietly replaced by a discreet, professional private security firm.
Atwells Avenue in Providence was quiet on a crisp autumn afternoon when a sleek black town car pulled up beside a newly renovated community clinic near the harbor.
Alice Brennan stepped out onto the sidewalk, holding a box of medical supplies. She wasn't working agency shifts anymore. As of the first of the month, she had been appointed the director of a brand-new community health initiative funded entirely through an anonymous philanthropic trust managed by Marchetti Holdings.
The back door of the town car opened.
Nero stepped out first, his tail giving a dignified, slow wag as he spotted her. Stefano followed right behind him, wearing a charcoal overcoat, his posture upright and completely recovered from his injuries.
He walked over, stopping a few feet from her on the sunlit sidewalk.
"How's the new clinic running?" Stefano asked, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Better than expected," Alice replied, adjusting her bag over her shoulder. "We've already treated twice as many patients this week as we did last month. No bullet wounds yet, mostly just childhood asthma and routine checkups."
Stefano nodded, looking around the peaceful neighborhood before meeting her eyes. "Good. Because I had my financial team audit the ledger for your department this morning."
Alice raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms defensively. "And? Did I overspend on gauze?"
Stefano stepped closer, the hard, intimidating aura of his past life melting away into something warm, steady, and entirely genuine.

"The books are completely balanced," Stefano said softly, reaching out to gently pat Nero as the mastiff leaned affectionately against Alice's knee. "And for the first time in my life... I actually like what I see on the bottom line."
Alice smiled, looking down at the massive dog who had changed everything, knowing that the storm was finally over, and the ledger of her life was balanced at last.
