Chapter 5 - The Trap SpringsWhen we walked down the stairs, Brett was standing in the kitchen, dressed in his dirty work trousers, pouring coffee into a chipped mug.

He looked up, his eyes narrowing as he saw us coming down together—not with Elena creeping three paces behind, but side by side.
“I thought I made myself clear,” Brett said, setting the coffee pot down with a hard clatter. “Elena, get to the stove. Maria, get your bags.”
I walked straight to the kitchen island, pulled out a barstool, and sat down. Elena sat beside me, her arms crossed over her chest.
Brett’s face darkened, the deep purple veins on his neck bulging as his temper flared.
“Are you deaf?” he growled, reaching for his leather belt on the counter. “I said—"
“I sent the dossier to the Oregon State Attorney General’s Office forty-five minutes ago, Brett,” I interrupted, my voice perfectly level.
He froze, his hand hovering two inches above the leather strap.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about Dr. Arthur Vance,” I said smoothly, tapping the screen of my tablet. “I’m talking about the $600,000 you funneled into Nevada Shell Company #409. I’m talking about the $450,000 illegal mortgage you placed on this house to fund your oncology treatments in Guadalajara.”
The color drained from Brett’s face so fast it was like watching a sheet of paper turn ash-gray.
“You... you broke into my safe,” he stammered, his eyes darting toward the stairs.
“It’s not your safe, Brett,” Elena spoke up, her voice clear and strong for the first time in years. “It’s Dad’s safe. In Dad’s house. Paid for with Dad’s money.”
Brett stared at her, utterly shocked by her defiance. His shock quickly curdled into violent rage.
He grabbed the leather belt, stepping around the island toward us. “You ungrateful little bitch! I saved you! I kept you out of an institution! I’m your legal guardian!”
“Not anymore,” a calm voice announced from the front hallway.
Brett spun around.
The front door, which he had locked with his keypad the night before, swung wide open.
Standing on the porch were four state troopers in dark uniforms, accompanied by a tall woman in a tailored gray suit carrying a black briefcase. Behind them, two emergency medical technicians waited with a stretcher.
Assistant Attorney General Sarah Mercer stepped into the foyer, showing her badge.
“Brett Camden?” Mercer asked, her voice cold and professional.
“What is this?” Brett yelled, backing up against the kitchen counter. “This is a private residence! I have legal guardianship over that woman! She’s mentally incompetent!”
Mercer pulled a signed document from her briefcase. “As of 6:30 this morning, an emergency injunction was signed by Multnomah County Circuit Presiding Judge Miller. Your guardianship over Elena Miller has been suspended indefinitely due to credible evidence of severe physical abuse, grand larceny, and medical fraud.”
“That’s impossible!” Brett shouted, his hand trembling as he pointed at me. “She’s lying! She forged those papers!”
One of the state troopers stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Mr. Camden, drop the belt and put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for first-degree elder and vulnerable adult abuse, wire fraud, and illegal conversion of trust assets.”
“Get off me!” Brett screamed as the trooper grabbed his wrist, twisting his arm behind his back. “I have rights! I’m the owner of this house!”
“You’re not the owner of anything, Brett,” I said, stepping closer as the second trooper snapped the cuffs onto his other wrist. “The state has frozen all accounts associated with the trust. Your Mexican clinic wire transfers have been blocked. You’re going to be held at the Multnomah County Detention Center pending trial.”
Brett thritted against the officers’ grip, his face contorted in frantic, terrifying desperation. Without access to his offshore funds, his expensive medical treatments were effectively terminated.
As the troopers dragged him toward the door, he looked back at Elena, his eyes wide with a pathetic, terrifying plea.
“Elena! Please!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “Tell them! Tell them I looked after you! You need me!”
Elena stood up slowly from the barstool. She walked over to where he was pinned against the doorframe by the officers.

She looked him dead in the eye, her posture straight, her chin held high.
“Thirty seconds, Brett,” she said softly, echoing his own cruel words back to him. “Get out of my house.”
