Chapter 2 - The Hallway and the Archive

The corridor outside Mateo’s nursery was a masterclass in modern opulence—paneled in dark French walnut, illuminated by recessed gallery lighting, and lined with museum-quality art collected by generations of wealthy ancestors. But tonight, to Valeria, it felt like a tunnel.

She clutched the German bottle against her chest as if it were a live grenade. Her mind raced, replaying the past seven weeks in rapid, horrifying succession. The sleepless nights, Mateo’s blood-curdling screams, the endless parade of pediatricians who pocketed consulting fees while offering nothing more than steroid creams that only masked the symptoms for a few hours.

“He needs time to feel safe again,” Sofía’s words echoed in her mind.

Valeria reached the private elevator at the end of the wing, swiped her biometric security ring across the panel, and descended directly to the subterranean level housing the estate’s private diagnostics and security nexus.

The doors slid open to reveal a sterile, brightly lit workspace that looked more like a corporate intelligence hub than a residential basement. Two private security contractors sat in front of banks of multi-monitor setups, while Dr. Evans, the estate’s resident biochemist, was busy calibrating a high-precision spectrometer at a stainless-steel island.

Dr. Evans looked up as Valeria strode in, her face pale, her jaw set in a hard line.

“Mrs. Vance,” Evans said, standing up quickly. “Is there an emergency with the baby? I heard reports that the specialist—”

“The emergency is right here,” Valeria interrupted, placing the heavy glass bottle onto the stainless-steel counter with a sharp clack. “I want a complete molecular analysis of this liquid. Every single ingredient, synthetic binder, preservative, and trace element. I want to know what it breaks down into when exposed to heat and friction.”

Evans blinked, looking at the foreign label. “Isn't this the linen spray Doña Leonor imported from Munich? The organic one?”

“That’s what we were told,” Valeria said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. “Run the test, Doctor. And check it against industrial fabric stiffeners and heavy-duty flame retardants. Don't just run a standard organic screen—look for the things wealthy people don't expect to find in baby products.”

As Evans rushed to prepare the sample, Valeria turned toward the wall of monitors displaying the estate’s internal security feeds. Her eyes drifted to the camera covering the eastern corridor outside the master suite.

On screen, she saw Doña Leonor stepping out of the elevator, moving with uncharacteristic haste toward her private study. Leonor’s phone was pressed tightly to her ear, her free hand gesticulating angrily in the empty hallway.

Valeria tapped the console. “Zoom in on camera four. Audio up.”

The technician complied, filtering the background hum into a crisp, clear audio feed. Leonor’s voice crackled through the speakers, sharp with panic.

“...I told you to clear out the backup shipment weeks ago!” Leonor hissed into the phone. “If the lab runs a deep spectral analysis, they aren't going to find organic lavender, Heinrich. They’re going to find the industrial-grade softening agents we used to make the imported Egyptian cotton feel like silk! Why did you let them use the spray on his daily wear?”

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. The room around her seemed to tilt.

It wasn't an accident. It wasn't a rare genetic allergy or a fluke of nature. It was an intentional, systemic poisoning, masked by luxury, executed under the guise of providing the absolute best for the heir to the Vance dynasty.

And Leonor had known. From the very beginning, Leonor had known that whatever was making her grandson sick was tied directly to the lavish products she personally insisted on procuring.
