Chapter 6 - The Iron Widow’s Reign

Two weeks later, the rain over Manhattan had finally cleared, leaving behind crisp, brilliant autumn sunshine that flooded the penthouse living room with golden light.
The divorce papers had been signed, notarized, and filed under an ironclad annulment citing fraudulent misrepresentation and financial coercion. Preston had packed his two designer suitcases, cleaned out his remaining belongings, and slinked out of my life without uttering a single word of protest, knowing full well that a single phone call from me would unleash federal investigators upon whatever pathetic hole he decided to crawl into next.
He was gone. His debts were gone. The Brighton Beach syndicate was nothing more than a fading nightmare in my rearview mirror.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a porcelain cup of steaming green tea, looking down at the bustling streets of the city below.
My phone buzzed on the quartz kitchen island.
I walked over and picked it up. A notification flashed across the screen from my venture capital firm’s senior managing partner: Evelyn, the board just approved your promotion to Senior Managing Director of Acquisitions. Congratulations. You earned every inch of it.
A small, genuine smile touched my lips.
I looked down at my right hand, flexing my fingers against the cool morning air. No bruises. No cuts. Just the steady, unshakeable strength of a woman who had built her own empire from the ground up, brick by brick, and refused to let anyone tear it down.
