Chapter 3 - The Exposed Nerve

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the storm broke over the city.

I sat in the uncomfortable vinyl chair beside Lily’s hospital bed, holding a warm cup of coffee. Lily was awake, her eyes swollen and filled with confusion and pain. She couldn't speak through the metal wires holding her jaw together, but her eyes held a frantic, terrifying question: Why did this happen to me?

I stroked her hair gently. "It’s going to be okay, baby. The truth is coming out today."

I turned on the wall-mounted television, muting the sound, and tuned it to the local news station.

At 8:15 AM, the screen cut to a live press conference in front of the university's main administration building. Dean Vance stood behind a podium, looking ten years older than he had the day before. His hands shook violently as he adjusted his glasses and leaned into the microphones.

Subtitles flashed across the bottom of the screen: BREAKING NEWS: UNIVERSITY DEAN RELEASES CRITICAL EVIDENCE IN CAMPUS ASSAULT CASE.

On the screen, Vance read from a prepared statement, his voice cracking. He confessed that an "administrative error" had led to the temporary suppression of security footage regarding the attack on Lily Walker. He formally apologized to the Walker family and announced that full, unedited video footage had been turned over to the District Attorney's office and state police.

I unmuted the volume just as a reporter shouted a question: "Dean Vance! Does the footage identify the attackers?!"

Vance looked directly into the camera—looking right at me—and swallowed hard. "The footage clearly shows Ethan Cole, Brandon Hale, and Tyler Whitmore assaulting the victim with metal batons."

The media pool erupted into chaos.

Beside me, Lily’s eyes went wide. She looked at the television, then at me, her small hand clutching my fingers tightly. I squeezed back, giving her a reassuring smile.

"They won't get away with it, Lily," I said softly. "I promise you."

Ten minutes later, the door to the hospital room burst open.

It wasn't Richard Sterling this time. It was Arthur Cole himself, accompanied by two heavy-set men in dark suits who carried the unmistakable look of hired private security. Arthur Cole was a massive man with a reddened face, thick gray hair, and a tailormade suit that strained against his broad shoulders.

"Walker!" Cole roared, stepping into the room without permission.

Before his security guards could clear the threshold, Viktor materialized from the hallway. In one swift, brutal motion, Viktor grabbed the first guard by his throat, slammed him against the doorframe, and disarmed the second guard before he could even reach inside his jacket. Viktor tossed both men into the hallway like sacks of laundry and shut the door, standing inside with his arms crossed over his massive chest.

Arthur Cole froze, his arrogance faltering for a fraction of a second as he looked at Viktor, then at me.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Cole demanded, though his voice lacked its previous strength. "Walker, did you have something to do with Vance’s press conference?!"

I slowly stood up from my chair, taking my time, making sure Cole felt every inch of the atmosphere shift in the room. The quiet, timid import merchant was gone. The cold, suffocating presence of The Ghost filled the small hospital room.

"You entered my daughter's room without knocking, Mr. Cole," I said, my voice dangerously low. "That is extremely rude."

Cole tried to puff out his chest. "Listen to me, you small-time nobody! You think releasing some footage scares us? My lawyers are already filing injunctions! We will claim the video was manipulated! Senator Hale is having the District Attorney replaced by noon! My son is not going to jail for some scholarship girl!"

I walked slowly toward him. Cole unconsciously took a step back until his spine hit the door.

"Scholarship girl?" I repeated softly. "Is that what you call her?"

"She’s nobody!" Cole spat, though cold sweat was now glistening on his forehead. "You’re nobody! I have fifty million dollars in assets! I own this city’s council! I will crush you, your business, and your daughter until you have nothing left!"

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small black flash drive, and held it up between two fingers.

"Do you know what this is, Arthur?" I asked gently.

"I don't care about your little toys!"

"This drive contains the complete ledger of your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands," I said, watching his eyes widen in sudden horror. "It contains the wire transfers you made to Donald Vance to fake the safety reports on the harbor project. It contains the names of the three city council members you paid off last month. And most importantly, it contains the private bank records showing you’ve been stealing funds from your own business partners."

Cole’s face drained of all color. The red flush vanished, leaving him looking like a corpse. "Where... how did you get that? That’s impossible! That’s encrypted by Zurich’s top..."

He stopped. He looked at Viktor, then at the calm, unreadable mask on my face. A terrifying thought began to take root in his mind.

"Who are you?" Cole whispered, his voice trembling. "You're not an importer."

"I am an importer," I said, leaning in close until my breath brushed his ear. "I import truth. And I export garbage like you."

I tapped his chest with the flash drive. "By 12:00 PM today, the IRS will seize your personal and corporate accounts. By 1:00 PM, the Department of Justice will issue an arrest warrant for you and your son. By 2:00 PM, your partners will realize you robbed them, and they will hire men to find you."

Cole dropped to his knees, his composure completely shattered. "Please... please, don't do this. I’ll give you whatever you want! Ten million! Twenty million! Just leave my family alone!"

"Ten million?" I scoffed, looking down at him with utter disgust. "You offered my daughter five hundred thousand dollars to buy her silence. You thought her pain had a price tag. Now you are going to learn what your arrogance truly costs."

I looked at Viktor. "Throw him out."

Viktor grabbed Cole by the collar of his expensive suit, lifted him off his knees, and dragged him screaming into the hallway.

I turned back to Lily. She was watching me, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and wonder. She had never seen this side of her father. She had never known the terrible power I commanded.

I sat back down beside her, taking her small hand in mine once more, my tone instantly softening into that of the father who loved her more than life itself.

"Don't be afraid, Lily," I whispered, kissing her knuckles. "Dad is just taking out the trash."
