Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks later, the federal grand jury indictments against David Miller and Viktor Vance made front-page news across the country.
MILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER CHARGED IN MURDER AND FRAUD, screamed the headlines of the Chicago Tribune, complete with photos of David being led away in handcuffs.
Inside the Astor Street brownstone, Clarion watched the morning news broadcast on the kitchen television while sipping black coffee.
The weight that had crushed her chest for three long years had finally lifted. She wasn't hiding anymore. She wasn't walking on eggshells, terrified of shattering a wine glass or breathing too loudly in the hallway.
A soft knock sounded at the kitchen door.
Dominic walked in, carrying a thick manila folder. He had changed out of his usual three-piece suit into a simple black cashmere sweater, though the dark circles under his eyes hinted at the relentless hours he had spent dismantling Vance’s remaining assets.
“The federal prosecutor’s office just finalized the restitution package,” Dominic said, placing the folder on the marble island. “Your father’s estate has been fully restored, along with punitive damages recovered from David’s frozen offshore accounts. You are, legally and financially, completely independent.”
Clarion looked at the folder, then up at Dominic.
“And you?” she asked softly. “What happens to you now that the war is over?”
Dominic paused, leaning against the counter across from her. “I manage the family business. The same thing I’ve always done.”
“Does it ever stop?” Clarion asked, her voice filled with quiet concern. “The violence? The enemies? The constant standing guard?”
“In my world?” Dominic smiled faintly, a tired, self-aware expression. “Never entirely. That is the price of power.”
“Then why do it?” she asked, stepping closer to him. “Why carry all of that?”
Dominic looked down at her, his icy blue eyes melting into something profoundly tender.
“Because if men like me didn't hold the dark, monsters like David Miller would rule the light,” Dominic said quietly. “And I decided a long time ago that some people deserved to be protected from the shadows.”
Clarion’s heart skipped a beat. She reached out, her fingertips gently brushing against his hand resting on the marble counter. Dominic turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers with hers. The contact sent a warm, electric shock straight through her veins.

“You protected me,” she whispered.
“I only gave you back what was yours,” Dominic replied.
