Chapter 2 - The Cold Light of Dawn

By 3:00 AM, I was sitting in the dark of my personal office in downtown Portland, thirty miles south of the Halstead estate. The harbor lights flickered outside my window, reflecting off the dark, churning waters of the bay.

I had played the recording five times. Each time, Warren’s betrayal sliced deeper, but with each repetition, the pain was slowly replaced by a hard, unyielding anger.

I was Adeline Cross. My father had built Crosswell Navigation from a single cargo vessel into a premier maritime logistics firm, and when he died, I had worked eighty-hour weeks to modernize the fleet and expand our routes. I had saved this company from bankruptcy. I had earned my seat at the head of the table.

I was not going to let a pair of elegant thieves strip me of my legacy.

"Adeline? My God, you look like a ghost."

I looked up as the door opened. Julian Sterling, my Chief Legal Counsel and my father's closest friend, walked into the room. He was wearing an overcoat over his pajamas, his hair uncharacteristically disheveled. I had called him an hour ago, telling him only that there was an emergency of the highest order.

"Listen to this, Julian," I said, my voice dead and empty of emotion.

I pressed play on my laptop.

As the recording filled the quiet office, Julian’s expression shifted from confusion to absolute horror. His jaw tightened, and his hands clenched into fists in his pockets. When the recording finished, he sat down heavily in the chair opposite my desk.

"Those absolute bastards," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of shock and rage. "The Halsteads are drowning. I suspected their shipping division was underperforming, but I had no idea they were facing a federal audit. They’re using this marriage to commit corporate piracy."

"If I sign that agreement tomorrow, what happens?" I asked, looking at him directly.

Julian pulled a thick legal folder from his briefcase—the draft of the agreement Celeste had pressured me to sign. He flipped to page forty-eight.

"It's a trap door," Julian said, his finger pointing to the legal jargon. "If you sign this, you are effectively giving Warren the keys to your vault. He can vote you out of your own company by Monday morning."

"We need to cancel the wedding," I said, my hand drifting to my bare neck. "I’ll issue a statement. We'll cite personal differences."

"No," Julian said, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the document. "If you cancel now, they will cover their tracks. They will deny the conversation, claim the recording was manipulated, and use their PR machine to paint you as an unstable, hysterical bride who ruined a multi-million-dollar merger. Your company's stock will take a hit, and they will escape unscathed. They need to be exposed publicly, Adeline. In a way they cannot recover from."

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the harbor. "They want a show, Julian. They've invited three hundred of the most influential political and business minds in New England to watch me hand over my life."

A slow, cold smile spread across my face.

"Let's give them a show they'll never forget."
