Chapter 5 - The Master CheckmateAt precisely 11:45 AM, Matteo Moretti walked into Dominic’s study, carrying a thin leather briefcase under his arm.

He looked cool, composed, and thoroughly relaxed.
"Dominic," Matteo said smoothly, stepping toward the desk. "A tragic night. Silvio’s treason has shaken the entire organization. But I assure you, the financial side of the family is completely secure. I have already begun auditing the accounts Silvio managed."
Dominic sat behind his desk, his hands folded loosely over his lap. Standing directly beside his chair was Maeve, her charcoal suit sharp, her arms crossed over her chest, her gray eyes staring at Matteo with cold indifference.
Matteo glanced at Maeve, a subtle flick of contempt passing over his eyes before he looked back at Dominic.
"Who is the woman, Dominic?" Matteo asked casually, setting his briefcase on the desk. "I heard rumors about a cleaner who caused a commotion during the Volk meeting last night."
"This is Maeve Nolan," Dominic said calmly. "She is my Chief Financial and Operational Advisor."
Matteo let out a short, aristocratic laugh. "An advisor? Dominic, with all due respect, the street is buzzing. You can't let a low-level housemaid influence family policy during a crisis of this magnitude. It makes you look weak."
"Does it?" Maeve spoke up, her voice cutting through the air like a honed blade. "As weak as granting a pre-authorized power of attorney to an offshore Cayman entity named Aegis Shipping?"
Matteo’s smile instantly vanished.
His hand, which had been resting casually on his leather briefcase, went completely rigid.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Matteo said, his voice losing a fraction of its smooth polish.
"Don't lie to me in Milanese, Matteo," Maeve said, stepping around the desk, her stride slow, deliberate, and commanding. "It sounds so clumsy when you're afraid."
Matteo’s jaw tightened. "Dominic, this is absurd—"
"At midnight last night," Maeve continued, pulling a sleek tablet from her coat pocket, "you executed an automated land transfer for the Newark deep-water piers using a forged digital signature from the Rossi board. You registered the property under Aegis Shipping, a shell corporation registered in George Town, Cayman Islands."
She tapped the screen of the tablet and turned it toward him.
"What you didn't know," Maeve said, her voice dripping with triumphant ice, "is that fifty minutes ago, at my direction, Dominic’s primary banking firm in London initiated an emergency forensic freeze on all Cayman entities linked to your primary law practice in Milan."
Matteo looked at the screen.
The state land registry page showed the Newark transfer—not as finalized, but as flagged for international corporate fraud and identity theft.
"You... you couldn't have done that in an hour," Matteo stammered, his face turning an unsightly shade of yellowish-gray. "The legal requirements for a forensic freeze—"
"The legal requirements were satisfied because I speak French, Matteo," Maeve interrupted, her gray eyes locking onto his terrified ones. "I personally telephoned the Chief Compliance Officer at Crédit Agricole in Geneva twenty minutes ago. His mother was an asylum seeker from Côte d'Ivoire whom my mother helped thirty years ago. He owed my family a debt. He authorized the freeze instantly."
Matteo stumbled back a step, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps.
The door to the study opened quietly behind him.
Marko and two heavy enforcers stepped into the room, their hands resting on the grips of their holstered handguns.
Dominic slowly stood up from behind his desk. He walked around the heavy mahogany table, stopping two inches from Matteo. He reached out and gently took Matteo’s red silk tie, adjusting the knot with terrifying precision.
"You called her a housemaid, Matteo," Dominic whispered softly, his voice vibrating with a dark, lethal promise. "You thought because she wore an apron and carried a mop, she was beneath your notice. You thought your slick words and your European dialects made you untouchable."
Dominic leaned down, his dark eyes burning into Matteo’s soul.
"She stripped you of your wealth, your land, and your freedom in forty-five minutes without firing a single shot," Dominic said. "She is tenfold the mind you will ever be."
"Dominic... please..." Matteo choked out, tears of terror leaking from his eyes. "We can work this out... I can transfer the Cayman accounts directly to you..."
"The Cayman accounts are already mine," Dominic said simply. He looked over Matteo’s shoulder at Marko. "Take him down to the basement. Put him in the cell right next to Silvio. They can comfort each other while they wait for their trials."
"No! Dominic! Please!" Matteo screamed as Marko and the enforcers dragged him backward out of the study, his leather shoes skidding helplessly across the hardwood floor until the heavy double doors slammed shut.
The room returned to a quiet, serene stillness.
Dominic turned back to Maeve.
He looked at her standing there—confident, brilliant, radiant, and completely untouchable in her sharp charcoal suit.
"That was magnificent," Dominic murmured, a look of profound, intense devotion filling his dark eyes.

"It was just double-entry bookkeeping and an ear for bad accents," Maeve said, a faint, genuine smile touching her red lips for the first time in twelve years.
"No," Dominic said, stepping closer to her, taking both of her hands in his. "It was the day the quiet woman took her rightful place."
