Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Leverage

“Emily.”

The single word fell from Lorenzo’s lips like a falling anchor as he shoved past a bewildered city councilman and came to an abrupt halt right in front of me. His chest heaved, his dark eyes wide with a chaotic mix of fury, disbelief, and a raw, agonizing desperation I had never seen in him before.

“Get away from me, Lorenzo,” I said, my voice entirely steady, ringing with a cold, metallic authority that made even his bodyguards hesitate.

“You... you're pregnant,” he whispered, his voice cracking slightly as his hand instinctively twitched toward my stomach before pulling back as if burned. “Six months. That means... that was why...”

“That was why I walked out of your office and never looked back,” I finished for him, looking straight into his dark, haunted eyes. “You thought I was a decorative fixture. A quiet little doll to smile at your charity galas while you played house with your secretary and laughed about how blindly I trusted you.”

“Emily, I can explain—” he started, his voice dropping into a desperate plea.

“Save your breath,” I interrupted, stepping closer so only he could hear. “You don't have anything to explain that I don't already know. You’re a syndicate boss, Lorenzo. You built an empire on blood, intimidation, and the assumption that everyone around you is disposable.”

Dozens of high-profile guests were staring at us now, whispering behind cupped hands. Lorenzo’s bodyguards stepped in tighter, looking frantically to their boss for an order.

“You can't hide from me, Emily,” Lorenzo muttered, his voice turning dark and dangerous as the mafia boss reemerged beneath the cracking veneer of the desperate husband. “You are my wife. That child is a DeSantis. You come back with me tonight, or I swear to God, I will tear this entire coastal town down to bedrock until I find every single person who helped you.”

I didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, calm smile touched my lips.

“You won't tear down anything, Lorenzo,” I whispered, reaching into my emerald evening clutch and pulling out a slim, encrypted flash drive. I pressed it gently into his palm, curling his fingers around it.

He frowned, looking down at the drive. “What is this?”

“That is every single offshore account, every shell company, every corrupted municipal contract, and every piece of federal evidence required to dismantle DeSantis Holdings brick by brick,” I said smoothly. “While you were wasting six months searching hotels for a frightened runaway wife, I spent every single day working with federal prosecutors who have been waiting for someone on the inside to hand them the golden key.”

Lorenzo stared at the flash drive as if it were a live grenade.

“If anything happens to me,” I continued, my voice dropping into an icy register, “or if your men so much as look at Oakhaven sideways, that drive—along with three redundant encrypted backups set to timed release—goes straight to the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the national press. You’ll spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal box, watching your empire rot from the inside out.”

“You... you set a trap,” he whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.

“You built the cage, Lorenzo,” I replied, stepping back and smoothing down the front of my emerald gown. “I just locked the door.”

Without waiting for his answer, I turned on my heel and walked serenely toward the grand exit, leaving the most feared mafia boss on the East Coast standing paralyzed in the center of the ballroom, holding his own execution in the palm of his hand.
