Chapter 4 - The Morning AfterThe sun rose over Seoul at 6:14 AM, breaking through the clouds and casting golden ribbons of light across the damp rooftops of the city. The rain had completely stopped, leaving the air cold, crisp, and smelling of washed concrete and fresh autumn wind.

Inside Suite 1804 at the Hanul Grand, the floor-to-ceiling windows offered a clear, breathtaking view of Namsan Tower standing tall against a bright blue sky.
Amara woke up on the high-grade linen sheets. She didn't move for several minutes, simply watching the morning light move across the soft grey carpet of the bedroom.
For the first time in six weeks, the knot of constant, suffocating panic in her chest was gone.
She sat up, dressed in her dark trousers and a clean white blouse she had pulled from her suitcase, and walked out into the suite's living room.
Zuri was already awake, standing by the window holding a porcelain cup of coffee, dressed in her own fresh clothes.
"The news came on twenty minutes ago," Zuri said without turning around, gesturing toward the silent TV screen mounted on the wall.
Amara looked at the screen. A news ticker running across the bottom of a Korean business broadcast read: HANUL GLOBAL VICE-CHAIRMAN ARRESTED FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD... MERIDIAN ACQUISITIONS FROZEN BY PROSECUTOR.
"They didn't waste time," Amara said, walking over to stand beside her friend.
"Ethan Kang doesn't strike me as a man who leaves loose ends," Zuri observed, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "He cleared the whole legal team by five in the morning. His legal assistant called my phone thirty minutes ago. The freeze on my bank account was lifted at 5:30 AM. My full balance has been restored, along with a written apology from the clearinghouse."
Amara turned to look at her. "Zuri, that's amazing."
"It's acceptable," Zuri corrected, though a rare, brilliant smile broke across her face. "It means I can finally buy decent granola."
A knock sounded at the suite door.
Amara walked down the corridor and pulled the door open.
Julian Kang stood in the hallway. He was wearing a fresh light-grey suit, holding two thick brown leather folders under his arm and a large paper bag that smelled faintly of freshly baked French pastries.
"Good morning," Julian said cheerfully, stepping into the suite without waiting for an invitation. "I brought almond croissants from the ground-floor bakery. They are six thousand won each, which I am charging directly to my brother's private account."
"We appreciate your petty theft," Zuri called out from the living room.
Julian set the bag of pastries and the two leather folders on the coffee table. He sat down on the edge of the sofa, leaning his elbows on his knees.
"My brother is currently in a closed-door meeting with thirty very angry shareholders," Julian said, picking up a croissant. "He has been yelled at in four different languages since seven o'clock this morning."
Amara sat in the armchair opposite him. "How is he handling it?"
"He’s handing them quarterly earnings projections that show a twelve percent increase once my uncle's fraudulent overhead is removed," Julian smiled. "He’s fundamentally a terrifying human being when he has numbers on his side."
Julian reached down and tapped the top leather folder on the table.
"This is from our legal department," Julian said, his tone shifting into something more professional. "The deed for 14-8 Mapo-dong has been fully cleared of all Meridian liens. Mrs. Bae was contacted by our housing liaison two hours ago. She was... extremely emotional. She wanted me to give you this."
Julian pulled a small, hand-written white envelope from his jacket pocket and handed it to Amara.
Amara opened it. Inside was a key card to her old apartment building, along with a note written in Mrs. Bae's neat, slightly trembling Korean script:
Amara, I am so sorry. The door code is set to your birthday. Please come home.
Amara held the note in her fingers, feeling a warm, quiet prickle behind her eyes.
"And this," Julian said, touching the second leather folder on the table, "is from Ethan personally."
Amara looked at the second folder. It was made of dark navy leather, embossed with the three silver arcs of Hanul Global.
"What is it?" she asked.
"It’s an employment contract," Julian said.
Amara went still. "An employment contract?"
"Hanul Global is establishing an independent Internal Compliance and Tenant Advocacy Division," Julian explained, looking directly at Amara. "It will operate completely separate from our real estate acquisition team, with direct reporting authority to the Board of Directors. The position is Director of Community Compliance."
Amara stared at the dark navy folder.
"The contract includes a full relocation allowance, a private legal retainer budget, and a competitive executive salary," Julian continued. "Ethan felt that the company spent six weeks under the guidance of a man who didn't care about human lives. He wants someone in that building who knows exactly what eight dollars and two suitcases feel like."
Zuri walked over from the window, leaning against the arm of Amara's chair, looking down at the navy folder.
"Does this job come with an office with a door that locks?" Zuri asked bluntly.
Julian laughed. "It comes with an entire floor on the thirty-eighth level, Ms. Thompson. And Ethan has already approved a secondary contract for a Senior Legal Investigator. Which, if I am not mistaken, matches your exact credentials."
Zuri raised her eyebrows, looking at Amara. "Well. That is significantly better than teaching six-year-olds how to spell 'apple'."
Amara reached out, her fingers touching the smooth navy leather of the folder.
"Where is Ethan?" Amara asked softly.
Julian looked toward the suite’s front door.
Ethan Kang was standing in the open doorway.
He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a dark grey shirt with the collar open. He looked tired, his hair slightly messy from the long morning, but his dark eyes were completely clear, steady, and focused on Amara.
"He's right here," Ethan said quietly, stepping into the suite.

Julian stood up immediately, grabbing his pastry bag and giving Zuri a quick nod. "Come along, Zuri. Let's go down to the lobby and discuss your legal investigator budget before my brother remembers he's supposed to be frugal."
Zuri looked at Amara, gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, and followed Julian out into the corridor, shutting the heavy suite door softly behind them.
