Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Background

The silence in the private café room stretched from uncomfortable to agonizing. Charles was still breathing heavily, puffing his chest out like an cornered animal, but the wind had completely gone out of his sails. He knew the video was a legal nuclear weapon.
Yet, Brenda’s reaction completely derailed the dynamic of the table.
She wasn't angry about the assault being exposed. She wasn't defending her husband's violent temper. Her entire focus was locked onto the frozen screen behind me, her eyes wide with a manic, unhinged terror that made my spine tingle.
I subtly adjusted my laptop angle, keeping the video paused while my mind raced backward, replaying the footage in my head frame by frame. The camera had been positioned on the bookshelf in the Reynolds' living room, angled toward the hallway leading to the laundry room and the front entryway. When Charles had slapped me, the camera captured the foreground clearly. But what was happening in the deep background of that specific timestamp—8:34 AM?
Behind Charles’s shoulder, visible through the arched doorway of the formal study across the hall, was a heavy oak filing cabinet that Charles always kept locked. In the blurred periphery of the wide-angle lens, during the exact second the audio picked up the sound of my head hitting the chair, something miraculous and terrifying had occurred in the study.
The hidden panel on the side of the oak bookcase had swung open.
And out stepped Arthur Vance—Charles’s older brother and business partner, a man the entire extended family had whispered was "dead and buried in a private sanitarium in Switzerland" following a tragic mental breakdown back in 1998.
I kept my face completely blank, masking my sudden surge of adrenaline. I turned slowly back toward Brenda, letting a thin, knowing smile touch my lips.
"You know, Brenda," I murmured, leaning forward across the table, "when I installed that camera to protect the wedding gifts, Ryan told me the Wi-Fi was too weak to record anything. But he lied, didn't he? Or maybe... he just didn't know what his father was hiding in the walls of this house."
Charles snapped his head toward his wife. "Brenda, what is she talking about? Shut her up!"
Brenda didn't answer Charles. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid gasps. She looked at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave. "How... how much did you see?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the café's air conditioner.
"I saw enough to know that Arthur Vance isn't resting in peace in Europe," I replied coolly, locking eyes with her. "In fact, he looks remarkably spry for a man who legally died twenty-four years ago while signing over his fifty-percent voting stake in Reynolds Global Logistics to his loving younger brother, Charles."
The color drained entirely from Charles’s face. The aggressive, blustering patriarch vanished in an instant, replaced by a desperate, cornered criminal. He lunged across the table, his massive hands slamming onto the wood, knocking over his coffee cup.
"You lying little bitch!" Charles roared, spraying spittle across the tablecloth. "You edited that! That's deepfake garbage! Arthur died in '98! He died!"
"Then why did he look right at the security camera and whisper, 'Help me' just before the hidden panel slid shut?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ryan looked between his parents, his face twisting in utter confusion and betrayal. "Dad? Mom? What is she talking about? Who is Arthur? Uncle Arthur died when I was two years old! What's going on?!"

"Shut your mouth, Ryan, don't listen to her!" Brenda shrieked, finally breaking her composure, bursting into hysterical tears as she clawed at Charles’s sleeve. "We're ruined, Charles! She knows! She knows everything!"
I closed my laptop lid with a soft, decisive click. The meeting was over. The game had completely changed. They had thought they were dealing with a frightened, submissive daughter-in-law they could bully into washing underwear and accepting physical abuse. Instead, they had invited an apex predator into their home, and now, the multi-million-dollar empire built on fraud, betrayal, and locked doors was about to come crashing down around them.
