Chapter 4 - The Night of Steel

Two weeks passed.

To the outside world, a massive legal battle was raging in the Chicago courts. Headlines dominated the papers: BILLIONAIRE RYKER STEEL FIGHTS CORRUPT LAW FIRM FOR CUSTODY OF ABANDONED HAWTHORNE TWINS.

Inside Steel Manor, however, an entirely different story was unfolding.

The cold, austere modern fortress was undergoing a slow, beautiful metamorphosis. The cavernous living room now featured a large colorful play rug strewn with Lego bricks, wooden trains, and drawing pads. The quiet halls were frequently punctuated by the sound of little footsteps and high-pitched giggles.

Ryker, a man who used to work sixteen hours a day at his downtown office tower, had completely shifted his operations to his home study.

He sat at his desk late one evening, reviewing financial audit reports showing how Croft had systematically siphoned money from Julian Hawthorne’s company before his death.

A soft knock came at the open study door.

Ryker looked up. Lily was standing there in pink footie pajamas, holding Barnaby the bear by his arm.

"Lily?" Ryker set his pen down immediately. "Why are you up, sweetie? It's past nine."

"Owen had a bad dream," she whispered, twisting her toes into the thick rug. "He dreamed the lady in the beige coat came back to take Barnaby."

Ryker stood up from his desk, walking across the room and kneeling before her. "Where is he?"

"In our room."

Ryker took her small hand and walked down the hallway to the freshly decorated children’s suite. The room was warm, painted a soft sky blue, with twin beds side-by-side. Owen was sitting up in bed, his small knees pulled to his chest, silent tears running down his cheeks.

Ryker sat on the edge of Owen’s mattress. The heavy leather frame creaked under his weight.

"Hey, buddy," Ryker said gently. "Lily told me you had a nightmare."

Owen sniffled, wiping his nose with the back of his sleeve. "Was... was it true? Did our real daddy die because we weren't good?"

Ryker felt an unbearable ache in his chest. He reached out, pulling Owen into his arms, wrapping his broad, powerful frame around the little boy. Owen instantly buried his face into Ryker’s shoulder, his tiny hands clutching the lapels of Ryker’s dress shirt.

"Listen to me, Owen," Ryker said, his voice shaking with fierce conviction. "Your real daddy loved you more than life itself. He worked hard to make sure you and Lily would always be safe. What happened to him was not your fault. And what Vanessa did was because she was a cruel, selfish person."

"Are you going to leave us too?" Owen sobbed softly against Ryker's neck. "When the court stuff is over?"

Ryker held the boy tighter, looking over at Lily, who had climbed onto the bed and was leaning against his arm.

"I am never leaving you," Ryker swore, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "No matter what happens. You belong here now. With me."

Suddenly, the warm lights in the room flickered twice and plunged into total darkness.

In the hallway, the low, discreet chime of the estate security alert began to pulse.

Ryker’s instincts kicked in instantly. The main power grid for the entire fifty-acre estate had just been cut.

Before the backup generators could engage, a sharp, suppressed thump-thump echoed from the north courtyard down the hall, followed by the sound of breaking glass.

Croft hadn't waited for the court ruling. He had sent mercenaries to pull off a desperate, violent raid to snatch the children and destroy the evidence linking him to Julian Hawthorne's murder.

"Ryker!" Marco’s voice barked through the encrypted comms earpiece Ryker always wore. "Perimeter breached! Six armed hostiles entered through the north conservatory! They cut the main power lines!"

"Get the internal team to the west wing!" Ryker commanded into his earpiece, his voice turning into ice and steel. "I have the kids."

Ryker didn't panic. He scooped both Lily and Owen into his arms in a single fluid motion.

"Stay quiet, both of you," Ryker whispered, his tone so calm and commanding that neither child cried. "We're going to play a game. We're going to hide in my secret room."

He carried them swiftly through the dark hallway. He knew every inch of his house in the pitch black. He reached his private study, pressed a hidden biometric panel behind a bookshelf, and a thick reinforced steel door slid open silently—the estate’s panic room.

He placed Lily and Owen inside on a plush leather sofa. The panic room had its own independent power supply, air filtration, and direct emergency comms to the FBI.

"Stay here, keep Barnaby close, and do not open this door for anyone except me or Marco," Ryker instructed softly, kissing both of their foreheads.

"Ryker, don't go!" Lily cried softly, catching his hand.

"I have to go turn the lights back on, sweetie," Ryker smiled in the dim LED glow of the panic room. "I'll be right back."

He stepped out, and the steel door locked securely behind him.

In the dark hallway, Ryker pulled a tactical sidearm from a concealed drawer beneath his desk. His eyes adjusted to the shadows. He wasn't the billionaire corporate executive right now. He was the man who had fought his way up from the rough streets of South Chicago—a predator defending his den.

Heavy footsteps approached the end of the study hallway. Two men in dark tactical gear carrying suppressed carbines stepped around the corner, their weapon flashlights sweeping the room.

"Clear the study!" one muttered in a low voice. "Find the kid—"

Ryker stepped out from the shadows like a phantom.

Before the first mercenary could raise his weapon, Ryker struck with devastating, lethal precision. He grabbed the barrel of the carbine, twisting it violently downward while driving a crushing palm strike into the man's throat. The mercenary collapsed, gasping for air.

The second man swung his weapon toward Ryker, but Ryker disarmed him in a fraction of a second, sweeping his legs out from under him and driving him face-first into the hardwood floor, rendering him unconscious with a swift strike to the temple.

Down the hallway, bright emergency floodlights suddenly flared back on as the heavy industrial backup generators kicked in.

Gunfire echoed from the main foyer as Marco and the elite estate security force overwhelmed the remaining four intruders. Within three minutes, all six mercenaries were disarmed, zip-tied, and pinned to the marble floor of the grand foyer.

Marco walked up to Ryker, wiping a cut on his forehead, looking at his boss, who stood over the fallen men in his dress shirt and trousers, his eyes glowing with white-hot fury.

"All hostiles contained, Boss," Marco breathed, panting. "FBI and SWAT are three minutes out."

Ryker walked over to the lead mercenary pinned to the floor by Marco’s boot. Ryker knelt, grabbing the man by his tactical vest and pulling his face inches from his own.

"Who paid you?" Ryker growled.

The man spat blood onto the floor, sneering. "Go to hell, Steel."

Ryker’s grip tightened until the tactical material groaned. "You brought guns into a house where two five-year-old children were sleeping. Give me a name, or I guarantee you will disappear into a private military detention facility in Eastern Europe before sunrise."

The mercenary’s eyes flickered with genuine terror. He knew Ryker Steel had the power to make good on that threat.

"Croft!" the man panicked, coughing. "Harrison Croft! He paid us half a million in crypto! He said... he said if we got the kids and burned the study, he'd clear the rest when he took over Hawthorne Logistics!"

May you like

Ryker let go of the man’s vest, standing up slowly. He wiped his hands on a clean linen handkerchief.

"Marco," Ryker said, his voice deadly quiet. "Call the United States Attorney. Tell him Harrison Croft just authorized an armed terrorist raid on a private residential estate. And tell him... if the FBI doesn't arrest Croft within thirty minutes, I will go handle him myself."
