Chapter 5 - Confronting the Architect of the Betrayal

The 68th-floor executive boardroom of Sterling Tower was designed to intimidate.

A massive, twenty-seater slab of polished black Brazilian walnut dominated the center of the room, surrounded by leather chairs that cost more than a brand-new luxury sedan. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the glittering evening skyline of Manhattan, where thousands of office lights twinkled like distant stars against the gathering dusk.

At 8:00 AM sharp the next morning, the heavy double doors swung open.

Arthur Vance sat at the head of the long table, flanked by three senior board members whose expressions ranged from nervous skepticism to outright hostility. My mother, Margaret Sterling—dressed in an immaculate Chanel suit with diamond studs in her ears—sat regally to Arthur’s right, looking like an empress presiding over a trial.

When I walked through the double doors, I wasn't alone.

I walked in with Emma on my right arm, her posture immaculate, wearing a sharp navy blazer and trousers that commanded absolute respect. Behind us walked our head of security, carrying a secure briefcase containing our federal and medical affidavits.

Arthur Vance sneered, leaning back in his leather chair and resting his fingertips together.

“Well, well,” Arthur drawled loudly, addressing the board before I could even take a seat. “Look who finally decided to grace us with his presence. Alex, we called an emergency executive session to address the chaotic security breach in our lobby yesterday afternoon, and instead of answering our calls, you’ve brought... unauthorized guests into a restricted corporate boardroom?”

My mother didn't even look at me. Her icy gaze locked onto Emma with a venomous hatred that hadn't aged a single day in seven years.

“Putrid,” my mother muttered loud enough for everyone to hear, shaking her head. “Dragging some common girl off the streets and parading her around the boardroom like a circus act to cover up a personal embarrassment. Have you completely lost your mind, Alexander?”

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I walked slowly to the head of the table—directly opposite Arthur—and placed both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning forward.

“Mother, Arthur,” I said, my voice cutting through the stale air of the boardroom like a razor blade. “Save your breath. You called an emergency session to question my fitness as CEO based on the arrival of my heirs.”

“Your heirs?” Arthur scoffed, though a flicker of unease crossed his eyes. “Alex, nobody vetted these children. For all we know, they’re part of an opportunistic scam—”

“Silence, Arthur,” I barked, the sheer force of my command making the veteran executive flinch.

I reached into my breast pocket, pulled out the certified DNA assay report, and tossed it across the heavy walnut table so it slid right against Arthur’s coffee cup.

“That is the genetic verification from New York Presbyterian Hospital,” I said coldly. “Lucas and Noah Sterling are my biological sons. 99.999 percent match. Legally, biologically, and undeniably part of the Sterling lineage.”

My mother gasped, clutching her pearls as the color drained entirely from her face. “That’s... that’s impossible! The doctors said—!”

“The doctors lied,” I interrupted, my eyes locking onto my mother with a glare so fierce she physically shrank back into her chair. “Or rather, the doctors were paid to lie. Right, Arthur?”

Arthur’s face went rigid. He swallowed hard, trying to maintain his mask of corporate arrogance. “What absolute nonsense are you blathering about, Alex? You’re delusional—”

“Am I?” I snapped my fingers.

The double doors swung open again. This time, federal marshal badges gleamed under the boardroom lights as Special Agent Vance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office walked in, accompanied by two investigators carrying boxes of seized financial archives.

“Arthur Vance and Margaret Sterling,” Agent Vance stated crisply, pulling two folded arrest warrants from his pocket. “You are being formally detained for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, extortion, wire fraud, and the illegal manipulation of corporate compliance records dating back to October 2019.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Two board members leaped out of their chairs in sheer terror.

“This is an outrage!” Arthur shouted, half-rising from his seat as the marshals stepped forward and placed heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. “You can’t do this! I am the vice-chairman of this corporation!”

“You were the vice-chairman,” I corrected him smoothly, walking around the table until I stood right beside him, looking down into his panicked, sweating face. “As of ten seconds ago, your voting shares have been frozen under federal investigation for corporate corruption, and your seat on the board has been permanently revoked.”

My mother sat frozen in her chair, tears of absolute humiliation streaming down her powdered cheeks as she stared up at me.

“Alex... please,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I’m your mother...”

“You stopped being my mother the day you traded my family for a corporate balance sheet,” I said, my voice entirely devoid of pity. “Take them out of my sight.”

As the federal marshals hauled Arthur and my mother out of the boardroom in handcuffs, the remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence, staring at me as if I were a god who had just descended from the heavens to purge the temple.

I straightened my jacket, walked calmly to the head of the table, and pulled out my chair.

“Now,” I said, looking out across the remaining executives. “If there are no further objections regarding my fitness to lead this company... let’s get back to business.”
