Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun broke over the pine trees of Lake Forest, casting long golden beams through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate's medical wing.
I hadn't slept. I sat in a high-backed leather chair beside Ara’s bed, my eyes fixed on her face. Her hand was warm in mine—so small, yet belonging to the fiercest woman I had ever known.
Beside her pillow lay Ivy’s drawing, catching the morning light.
A soft sigh escaped Ara’s lips. Her fingers twitched within my grasp.
I leaned forward instantly, my heart hammering against my chest like a trapped beast. "Ara?"
Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy and disoriented. Her grey eyes—the exact shade of our daughters'—blinked against the sunlight, straining to focus. She shifted her head on the pillow, her throat moving as she swallowed dryly.
"Knox...?" she whispered, her voice barely a rasp.
"I'm here," I said, leaning down, pressing my forehead against her knuckles. "I'm right here, Ara. You're safe. You're in my house."
Her eyes widened in a sudden spike of panic, her heart rate monitor accelerating rapidly. "Ivy... Isla... where are my girls?!"
"They're safe," I assured her instantly, my hand cupping her cheek, feeling her warm skin beneath my palm. "They are sleeping upstairs in the east wing. They are guarded by six of my best men. No one can hurt them here, Ara. I swear it on my life."
The panic in her eyes slowly melted into a wave of profound, exhausting relief. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her lashes and running down into her dark hair.
"You found us..." she sobbed softly. "I tried... Knox, I tried so hard to protect them..."
"Why didn't you come to me, Ara?" I asked, my voice cracking under the weight of seven years of unearned grief. "Seven years ago, you vanished overnight. You left no trace, no note... nothing. I spent years losing my mind searching for you. Why did you run?"
Ara closed her eyes tightly, taking a ragged breath as the antitoxins worked through her system.
"Because he told me he would kill you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Marcus Vance... seven years ago, he came to my apartment while you were in New York closing the security defense contract. He showed me photos of snipers positioned around your hotel. He showed me remote detonators linked to your vehicle."
My blood ran cold.
"He told me that if I stayed by your side, if I gave you the family you wanted, he would press the button," Ara continued, tears streaming continuously down her face. "He said you were too strong, too careful, and the only way to destroy you was through me. He gave me twelve hours to disappear completely. If I reached out to you, if I used your name, or if I tried to warn you... he promised he would detonate those charges."
"So you left..." I murmured, the unbearable agony of her sacrifice sinking deep into my soul. "You bore seven years of isolation, poverty, and fear... just to keep me breathing."
"Two weeks after I fled to a small town in Indiana, I realized I was pregnant," she whispered, looking up at me with raw, exposed vulnerability. "I found out it was twins. I wanted to call you so badly, Knox. Every single day, my hands shook holding the phone. But every time I looked out my window, I saw the same black sedans parked down the street. Marcus was watching me. He kept me alive just to ensure I stayed away from you."
"Why did you move back to Chicago six months ago?" I asked gently.
"Isla fell sick with a rare respiratory infection," Ara replied, her voice filled with a mother's fierce desperation. "Indiana didn't have the specialists she needed. I had to risk coming back to the city. I thought... I thought after seven years, Marcus had forgotten about me. But three months ago, a package arrived at my door with tea. A gift from an 'anonymous well-wisher.' I thought it was just a local community charity..."
"It was poisoned," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a terrifying, guttural register. "He was slowly killing you, Ara. He wanted you dead before you ever had the chance to cross my path again."
Ara reached up, her trembling fingers touching my jaw, tracing the scar near my ear. "Ivy and Isla... did you see them?"
"I saw them," I said, a soft, genuine smile finally breaking through my hardened demeanor. "They have your courage, Ara. And they have my eyes. Isla gave me the photo behind the frame."
"I kept it," Ara choked out a small laugh through her tears. "I told myself I would only let them call you if I was dying. I didn't want Marcus to use them against you..."
"No one is using anyone against me ever again," I said, taking her hand and kissing the palm. "You fought for seven years to keep me alive, Ara. Now it’s my turn to finish this war."
The door to the medical suite creaked open softly.
Two small heads peeked through the opening. Ivy and Isla, dressed in oversized flannel pajamas provided by Mrs. Gable, stood in the doorway, holding hands.
"Mommy?" Ivy called out softly.
Ara gasped, pushing herself up against the pillows despite her physical weakness. "My babies..."
The twins didn't hesitate. They ran across the polished floor, scrambling carefully onto the large medical bed, burying their faces into Ara’s arms. Ara held them tightly, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy, kissing their foreheads, their cheeks, their hair.
I stood up, stepping back to give them their moment, watching the three people who constituted my entire universe finally reunited in safety.
Isla looked up from her mother’s chest, turning her eyes toward me. "Mister Knox... did you keep your promise?"
I walked back to the edge of the bed, reaching out to stroke Isla’s soft hair. "I always keep my promises, Isla. And from today on, you call me Dad."
Ivy looked up, a bright, tearful smile blooming across her face. "Dad."
The word hit my heart like a thunderbolt, shattering the last remnants of the cold, unfeeling man I had built to survive the underworld. I leaned down, wrapping my arms around all three of them, holding my family close against my chest.
Behind us, the private intercom buzzed discreetly. Vance’s voice came through my earpiece.
"Boss, we have a situation at the perimeter gate. A delivery truck carrying industrial supply crates was intercepted. Our scanners picked up heat signatures inside the cargo bay. Heavy weaponry."
I gently disengaged from my family, kissing Ara’s forehead. "Stay here with the girls. The room is reinforced steel. No one gets in."

Ara grabbed my wrist, her eyes filled with fear. "Knox... be careful."
I looked down at her, my eyes cold as arctic ice. "Marcus Vance made the fatal mistake of coming into my territory, Ara. He thinks he’s dealing with the man I was seven years ago. He has no idea what a father will do to protect his children."
