Chapter 4 - The subpoenaTwo weeks after Maya’s arrival in Seattle, the federal subpoenas were served in Texas.

Julian had set up a private media room in the basement of the estate, outfitted with wall-to-wall monitors displaying real-time financial tracking, legal filings, and security feeds. Maya sat in a plush leather armchair, a blanket draped over her lap, watching a live news feed from a local Houston station.
“...and shocking developments today in the high-profile bankruptcy of tech entrepreneur Garrick Vance,” the anchor reported, images of a haggard, unshaven Garrick flashing across the screen as he was swarmed by reporters outside a federal courthouse. “Federal authorities have launched a criminal investigation into allegations of medical abuse, extortion, and systemic financial fraud. Sources close to the investigation indicate that former associates and family members are cooperating fully with federal prosecutors.”
The camera cut to Miriam standing outside a modest suburban motel, shielding her face with a cheap magazine as reporters shouted questions about her church expulsion and the sudden loss of her pension.
"They look miserable," Maya murmured, watching the screen without a shred of pity in her heart.
"They're just getting started," Julian said, walking over with a cup of coffee. He handed it to her and pulled up a chair. "Garrick’s defense attorney tried to file an emergency motion for spousal support, claiming you abandoned him and took off with stolen assets. My lawyers countered by submitting your medical records, surgical discharge notes, and a digital forensic report proving he intentionally withheld your post-op medication and destroyed your medical equipment."
Maya took a slow sip of her coffee. "Will he go to prison?"
"If the judge has any sense of justice, yes," Julian replied flatly. "The medical abuse charges carry a severe penalty in the state of Texas, especially given the vulnerability of a cancer recovery patient. Combined with the federal fraud charges, he’s looking at a minimum of ten to fifteen years."
A soft knock interrupted them. Thorne stepped into the media room, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
"Boss," Thorne said, nodding respectfully to Maya. "We have a visitor at the outer gate. It's Garrick's legal counsel, accompanied by Garrick himself. They bypassed the local police and drove straight up the mountain."
Julian’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous spark flashing in his cold gray gaze. "Garrick is here? In Seattle?"
"He managed to scrounge together enough cash for a one-way ticket," Thorne said. "He looks desperate. He's standing at the gate screaming your sister's name."
Maya felt a sudden cold chill wash over her, not from fear, but from the pathetic memory of the man she had once foolishly believed would protect her. She stood up, tossing the blanket aside.
"Let him in," Maya said.
Julian looked up at her, surprised. "Maya, you don't have to see him. I can have Thorne throw him off the property before he even reaches the front door."
"No," Maya said, her voice steady and resolute. "For three years, I hid behind closed doors. I let him dictate my reality, my health, and my worth. I want to see him standing outside these gates. I want him to see that I survived."

Julian studied her face for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, he gave a slow nod.
"Thorne. Bring him to the reinforced courtyard. But keep him twenty paces back."
