Chapter 4 - The Corporate Coup

While my personal life was shifting toward an unexpected stability, my underground empire was facing its greatest internal threat.

With rumors spreading through the Chicago underworld that my paralysis had made me weak, a coalition of regional capos led by Victor Vance—a ruthless logistics broker who had long coveted my shipping terminals—decided to make their move. They called an emergency council meeting at an upscale hotel downtown, expecting me to send a proxy or attend via a secure video feed.

They didn't expect me to show up in person.

When the private elevator doors opened on the penthouse floor of the hotel, my custom armored wheelchair rolled smoothly into the opulent mahogany boardroom. Luke stood immediately behind me, his hand resting casually inside his jacket, while four elite security operatives secured the perimeter doors.

Victor Vance stood at the head of the table, smiling with far too many teeth. "Well, look who decided to grace us with his presence. We thought you were too confined to your fortress, Danny."

"I heard you were redistributing my shipping lanes, Victor," I said, my voice cutting through the murmurs of the twenty syndicate bosses seated around the table.

"Times change, Whitfield," Vance sneered, leaning his palms against the glass table. "A man who can't walk the docks can't protect them. We’re taking over the District Four freight contracts. Effective immediately."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't reach for a weapon. I simply lifted my tablet, tapped the screen, and slid it across the glass toward him.

Vance glanced down at the display. The color drained instantly from his face.

It was a complete financial audit of his private accounts, showing that his offshore shell corporations had been systematically embezzling from the syndicate pension funds for three years. Worse, it included signed confessions from his primary accountants, who had already flipped under pressure from my federal contacts.

"You... you audited my books?" Vance choked out, his hands shaking as he touched the tablet.

"I built this city’s underground, Victor," I said, rolling forward another foot. "Did you really think a wheelchair meant I stopped paying attention? Every dock, every warehouse, every corrupt politician in your pocket belongs to me. You tried to divide an empire that was never yours to carve."

Vance lunged toward a concealed holster inside his jacket, but Luke was across the table in half a second, slamming Vance’s face down onto the glass with a sharp thud and relieving him of his pistol.

The remaining capos sat frozen, staring at the floor, absolutely silent.

"The meeting is adjourned," I said quietly, turning my chair around. "Anyone who wants to test my legs can try to outrun my lawyers."
