Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe failed strike on Anthony’s estate triggered a swift, merciless retaliation that shook the New Jersey underworld to its very foundations.

Within forty-eight hours, Anthony’s forces launched a coordinated blitz against the Moretti syndicate. Shipping docks were seized, illegal gambling dens were shut down, and the remaining leadership of the Moretti family was forced into hiding or turned over to federal authorities with airtight financial evidence that Anthony had compiled over five years.
By the end of the week, the Moretti family was completely broken, their thirty-year reign of terror in northern New Jersey brought to a definitive, permanent end.
Inside the Ironbound Tower, Anthony sat at his grand desk. The city below was bathed in the warm gold of a late afternoon autumn sunset.
Arthur Vance—Anthony’s estranged uncle and the chief federal prosecutor for the district—sat across from him. Between them lay a signed agreement detailing the total surrender of all illegal operations and the transition of the Vance holdings into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar commercial real estate and shipping conglomerate.
"I never thought I'd see the day, Anthony," Arthur Vance said, signing the final page with a gold pen. "You're walking away from the life. The feds are closing the organized crime file on the Vance family."
"I promised someone I would build something clean," Anthony said quietly, looking toward the side office where Scarlett was organizing files.
"She’s a remarkable woman," Arthur noted, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "She did what three federal task forces couldn't do in twenty years. She saved your soul, Anthony."
"She saved my life," Anthony corrected softly.
After Arthur left, the penthouse went quiet. Scarlett stepped out of her office, carrying a fresh cup of coffee on a silver tray. She wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.
She set the cup down on his desk. "Your coffee, Mr. Vance."
Anthony looked at the cup, then reached out, taking her hand and pulling her down into his lap. Scarlett gasped softly, wrapping her arms around his neck as he rested his forehead against hers.
"It's over, Scarlett," Anthony whispered, his eyes shiny with unexpressed emotion. "The Morettis are gone. The syndicate is dissolved. The businesses are legitimate. I'm a free man."
Tears of relief filled Scarlett’s eyes. "No more guns? No more bodyguards hiding in the bushes?"
"Just me," Anthony promised, kissing her cheek gently. "Just a man who loves you more than life itself."
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
Scarlett’s breath hitched. "Anthony..."
He opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless three-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set in platinum, catching the golden light of the setting sun.
"One year ago, I was sitting in a booth at the Cornerstone Diner, waiting for my life to end," Anthony said, his voice thick with emotion. "I was dead inside, Scarlett. I had built a fortress of fear and money around myself, and I thought I would die alone in the dark."
He looked into her eyes, his hand trembling slightly as he pulled the ring from the velvet box.
"You walked up to my table with a pot of burnt coffee and told me the truth when nobody else dared to breathe near me. You gave me hope. You gave me a future. Scarlett Monroe, will you marry me and spend the rest of your life reminding me to be a good man?"
May you like
Scarlett wept openly, joy bursting through her chest like a tidal wave. "Yes! Oh God, yes, Anthony!"
He slid the ring onto her finger—a perfect fit—and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss as the golden sun dipped below the horizon of the city they had reclaimed together.
