Chapter 3 - The Viper in the ShadowTwo weeks passed at the Falcone estate.

For the first time in her life, Brielle experienced what it felt like to exist without constant fear of hunger or eviction. Her physical wounds healed rapidly under the care of Julian’s private physicians. She spent her mornings walking through the estate's sprawling private gardens with Sophia, learning the history of the Falcone family, and her afternoons playing board games and drawing with Mia.

Yet, despite the luxury, Brielle didn't remain idle. She refused to be treated like a porcelain doll. She helped the head chef in the massive kitchen, insisting on cooking meals for Mia, and spent hours in the estate's vast library reading up on corporate logistics and international shipping.

Julian observed her quietly from afar. Every evening when he returned from his offices downtown, he would find her sitting in the library or playing in the garden with his daughter. Her presence had brought a soft, vibrant warmth into a house that had been cold and sterile ever since his wife had passed away five years prior.

However, beneath the surface of this newfound peace, a dark storm was brewing across Chicago.

In a soundproof executive suite on the top floor of a downtown skyscraper, Julian sat behind an obsidian desk. Standing across from him was Marco, his head of security, looking pale and tense.

"We finished interrogating the three men from the alley, Boss," Marco reported, his voice dropping low. "They didn't break easily, but once we brought in the forensic financial team, we traced the payment route."

Julian tapped his fountain pen against the leather desk mat. "Who bought them?"

"It wasn't the Moretti syndicate from New York," Marco said, taking a sharp breath. "It was an inside hit, Julian. The money originated from an offshore shell account linked directly to your cousin... Victor Falcone."

Julian’s movement froze. The air in the room temperature seemed to plunge into freezing territory.

Victor Falcone was Julian’s elder cousin, a senior vice-president in the Falcone Shipping Conglomerate. Victor had always resented Julian taking the head seat of the family empire after Julian’s father passed away.

"Victor..." Julian murmured, his voice deadly quiet. "He targeted my mother and my five-year-old daughter to trigger a leadership vacuum."

"Victor knew that if Nonna and Mia were eliminated, you would go on an unguided rampage," Marco explained. "You would have burned down rival territories, started a gang war, and the board of directors would have used your instability to remove you from the CEO chair. Victor would have stepped in as the calm savior."

Julian stood up slowly, stepping over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Chicago skyline. His reflection was cold, dark, and merciless.

"Does Victor know the hit failed?" Julian asked.

"He knows the men didn't report back," Marco replied. "He also knows that a waitress intervened and that you’ve taken her into your estate under high security. Victor is panicking, Boss. He knows it’s only a matter of time before the line leads back to him."

"Then we accelerate his panic," Julian commanded coldly. "Victor is hosting the annual Falcone Foundation Gala at the Drake Hotel this Saturday. Every major stakeholder, politician, and family lieutenant will be in attendance."

Julian turned around, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, calculated light.

"He expects me to arrive with a crew of hitmen to start a bloodbath," Julian said with a dark, ruthless smile. "Instead, I am going to walk into his party, announce his treason in front of the entire family board, and strip him of everything he owns."

"Are you taking security?" Marco asked.

"I am taking Marco and six operatives," Julian said. Then he paused, his thought shifting to the courageous girl currently sitting in his library back home.

"And I am taking Brielle Dawson."

Marco blinked in surprise. "Boss? Bringing Miss Dawson to a family event like that? It will put a massive target on her back."

"Victor thinks Brielle is a nobody—a disposable waitress who got lucky," Julian said softly, a deep sense of pride filling his chest. "He doesn't realize she is the key witness who saw the faces of his primary hitmen before they put on their masks. She holds the final piece of evidence we need to destroy him publicly."

Julian reached for his coat on the chair back. "Prepare the cars, Marco. It’s time to show Chicago what happens when someone touches my family."
