Chapter 1 - The First Melodies of Healing

The silence that inhabited the halls of the mansion was not merely the absence of sound; it was a heavy, suffocating pressure that seemed to sap the warmth from the very air. For eight long months, Frederico had stepped through the grand mahogany front doors with a sense of profound dread. His home, a sprawling architectural masterpiece of glass and steel nestled in the city's most exclusive gated community, had become a monument to his failures and his grief. Since the rainy morning when a reckless truck driver tore his wife Marina away from this world and left his seven-year-old twin daughters, Larissa and Camila, paralyzed from the waist down, Frederico had run from the reality of his own life. He buried himself in corporate acquisitions, high-stakes real estate developments, and back-to-back board meetings, arriving home late only to find his daughters asleep under the clinical supervision of high-priced night nurses.
But on this particular Tuesday afternoon, an unexpected shift occurred in the atmosphere. The heavy silence was broken before Frederico’s key even fully turned in the brass lock.
As he stepped onto the immaculate hardwood floor, the soft, muffled echo of laughter reached his ears. It wasn't the polite, calculated chuckle of his corporate peers, nor was it the gentle, pitying tone used by the physical therapists. It was a crystalline, bubbling explosion of pure childhood joy. Frederico stopped in his tracks, his expensive leather briefcase slipping slightly in his grip. His heart thundered against his ribs as he loosened his silk tie, his feet moving instinctively toward the large family living room.
When he reached the threshold, he froze, terrified that making a sound would shatter the mirage before him.
In the middle of the luxurious pink Persian carpet sat Amélia, the young maid he had hired just two months prior. She was kneeling, her eyes closed tight, while Larissa and Camila wheeled themselves as close as their specialized chairs allowed. The carpet was transformed into a chaotic, vibrant battlefield of makeup cases. With trembling but fiercely enthusiastic hands, Larissa was applying a massive smudge of electric blue eyeshadow across Amélia’s eyelids, while Camila was carefully steering a tube of bright ruby-red lipstick toward the young woman’s chin. Amélia didn't look like a domestic servant in that moment; she looked like a willing canvas, her face completely covered in clumsy, colorful brushstrokes.
"A little more on the left, Cami! She needs to look like a princess!" Larissa giggled, her tiny fingers covered in glitter powder.
"No, she needs to look like a fairy queen!" Camila countered, her face flushed with an animation Frederico hadn't seen since before the car crash.
Frederico’s foot shifted, causing a floorboard to creak. The sound was minor, but to Amélia, whose senses were always attuned to the strict rules of the household, it was a thunderclap. Her eyes snapped open. Through the smudged blue powder, she saw the imposing figure of her employer—the wealthy, distant real estate mogul whose face usually carried the weight of a stone graveyard.
Panic instantly washed over Amélia’s face. She scrambled backward on the carpet, trying to rise to her feet while hastily pulling down the sleeves of her gray uniform. "Mr. Frederico! Please, forgive me!" she stammered, her voice shaking as she tried to wipe the vibrant red lipstick from her chin with her wrist. "I—I lost track of time. The girls looked so sad after their therapy session, and I just wanted to... I am so sorry, sir. It won't happen again."
She fully expected to be fired on the spot. In Frederico's world, staff members were expected to be invisible, efficient, and thoroughly professional. Playing on a designer carpet with the employer's disabled children was an unpardonable breach of protocol.
But before Frederico could speak, a surprising resistance materialized. Larissa and Camila moved their wheelchairs forward simultaneously, their small hands reaching out to grab Amélia’s arms with an unexpected fierce determination.
"Don't go, Mely! We aren't finished yet!" Larissa protested, turning her head toward her father with a defiant spark in her eyes that sent a jolt straight through Frederico's soul.
"Daddy, don't be mad at her!" Camila pleaded, her lower lip trembling. "Mely didn't do anything wrong. We asked her to play. Please don't make her stop."
Frederico looked at the scattered makeup, the ruined designer carpet, and then, finally, into the eyes of his daughters. The dull, lifeless glaze that had occupied their expressions for eight months was gone, replaced by an incandescent sparkle. The cold, thick shell of ice that had encased his heart since Marina’s death began to show its first deep fracture.
Slowly, deliberately, Frederico dropped his briefcase to the floor. He didn't care about his bespoke tailored suit or the status it represented. He walked into the center of the room and sank to his knees, dropping his tall frame until he was at eye level with his daughters.
"Who said I want you to stop?" Frederico murmured, his voice hoarse, choked with an emotional tide he could barely suppress. He looked at Amélia, whose eyes were wide with shock, and then turned his face toward Camila, pointing to his own cheek with a shy, tentative smile. "I think I need a little bit of blue eyeshadow right here. What do you think?"
For a second, the girls gasped in disbelief. Then, a synchronized cheer erupted from them. Larissa lunged forward with a brush, and within minutes, Frederico was drawn into the chaotic magic of their world. As Amélia watched the wealthy tycoon laugh while his daughters smeared pink blush across his stubbled jawline, she realized that beneath the cold exterior of the grieving billionaire lived a desperate father who simply didn't know how to piece his family back together.
Later that evening, the playful chaos transitioned into the quiet routine of the night. Frederico did something he hadn't done since the accident: he dismissed the evening nurse early and assisted Amélia in preparing the girls for bed. He carried them to the bath, their small bodies light but fragile in his arms, feeling the profound weight of his absence over the last few months.
As he wrapped Camila in a warm towel, the little girl looked up at him, her eyes heavy with sleep. "Daddy? Can you sing the song mommy used to sing? The one about the moon over the river?"
Frederico froze, a sharp stab of grief piercing his chest. His throat closed up; he couldn't remember the melody without seeing Marina's face, without feeling the agony of the hospital room where she drew her last breath. "I... I don't know if I can remember the words tonight, sweetheart," he whispered, his eyes downcast.
From the doorway of the bathroom, where she was gathering the damp washcloths, Amélia softly cleared her throat. In a low, gentle cadence, she began to hum. It was a sweet, swaying melody, full of maternal warmth.
“The moon climbs high over the silver river, watching the little birds sleep in their nest...”
Camila’s eyes brightened. "Yes! That’s the song! Mely knows it too! She hums it when she cleans our room."
Frederico stared at Amélia, his chest tightening with a strange mix of sorrow and profound gratitude. Amélia blushed under his gaze, lowering her head politely. "My mother used to sing it to my sister and me, Mr. Frederico. I didn't know Mrs. Marina knew it as well."

"It's an old lullaby," Frederico said softly, his voice trembling as he joined his voice with Amélia’s, singing the final verses to his daughters until their eyelids fluttered shut.
As he walked down the grand corridor later that night, the mansion no longer felt like a frozen mausoleum. A small spark of life had been rekindled. However, Frederico was no fool. He knew that the world he belonged to—a world of high society galas, old-money families, and ruthless corporate competition—was built on rigid structures. A billionaire father growing attached to a young maid was the exact kind of scandal his snobbish peers and his manipulative mother-in-law, Victoria, would use to tear his fragile family apart. He had no idea that the spark of happiness he had just found was already on a direct collision course with the dark secrets Amélia herself was harboring.
