Chapter 6 - The New OrderSix months later.

The spring rain over Lake Michigan was gentle, washing away the last lingering streaks of winter snow from the green, rolling lawns of the Lake Forest estate.
The grand mansion was no longer dark.
Every window along the east wing was thrown wide open, letting in the fresh, clean breeze off the water, carrying the scent of blooming lilacs and damp earth through corridors that had once smelled of decay and isolation.
In the grand sunroom overlooking the cliffside gardens, a physical therapy parallel bar setup had been installed over the polished marble floor.
Dominic Caruso stood between the steel bars.
He was wearing a simple black t-shirt and grey sweatpants. His face was full, healthy, tanned from hours spent on the terrace, and his gray eyes were bright with a fierce, indestructible life.
Standing at the far end of the bars was Elena Hart.
She was dressed in a soft cream sweater and dark jeans, holding a stopwatch in one hand and a clip board in the other, a bright, triumphant smile gracing her soft lips.
"You have ten seconds to reach me, Mr. Caruso," she called out, her voice laced with that familiar, irresistible challenge. "Otherwise, I'm deducting fifty dollars from your daily care allowance."
Dominic let out a low, deep laugh—a sound that was now heard daily throughout the mansion.
He gripped the polished steel bars with his massive, calloused hands. With a slow, deliberate exertion of iron willpower and months of intense, grueling rehabilitation, he lifted his right leg, swinging his foot forward, planting his heel firmly against the floor.
Then his left.
Step by agonizing step, his strong frame moved forward across the marble floor—not as a paralyzed ghost, but as a man rebuilding himself from the foundation up, powered by pure grit and the unwavering, fierce devotion of the woman waiting for him at the end of the line.
When he reached the final marker, he didn't stop at the bar.
He let go of the steel support entirely, taking one full, unassisted step into the open space, wrapping his massive arms around Elena’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest as he took her weight, steadying them both on his own two feet.
Elena gasped softly, her arms instantly wrapping around his neck, her face burying into the crook of his warm shoulder.
"You took an unassisted step," she whispered, her voice thick with happy tears.
"I took three," Dominic corrected softly, his rough hand reaching up to cup her cheek, tilting her head back until her brown eyes met his icy gray ones—eyes that were now filled with an absolute, undeniable warmth. "And I'm not letting go."
He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of victory, spring rain, and a future built on unbreakable trust.
Below the cliff, at the South Side terminals, Marco was now running the logistics operations with ironclad security, while Julian and Vance were serving twenty-five-year sentences in a federal penitentiary for attempted murder and corporate treason.
When Dominic pulled back from the kiss, he reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a simple, breathtaking platinum band set with a single, flawless blue diamond that matched the color of the lake outside.
"You came to this house six months ago in a broken Honda Civic to fix an infected wound, Nurse Hart," Dominic murmured, his voice rough with emotion as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "You saved my life. You gave me back my throne. Now... stay and rule it with me."
Elena looked at the ring sparkling on her hand, then up into the handsome, fierce face of the man who had become her entire world.
"On one condition, Mr. Caruso," she smiled, her eyes shining like stars.
Dominic raised an eyebrow, a familiar, wicked spark flaring in his eyes. "Name it."
May you like
"If you're late for your afternoon stretches," she said, leaning up to kiss his jaw, "I'm still deducting fifty dollars."
Dominic let out a rich, booming laugh that echoed out over the blue waters of Lake Michigan, pulling his wife into his arms as the sun broke through the clouds, illuminating a home that was finally, completely healed.
