Chapter 3 - The Search Warrant and the TrapAt 11:30 AM, Detective Marcus Vance (again, no relation) from the Special Victims Unit arrived at the hospital room accompanied by two uniformed officers.

Detective Vance was a seasoned investigator in his late forties, with a no-nonsense demeanor and a weathered face that showed he had seen the absolute worst of humanity. He stepped into the room softly, acknowledging me with a subtle nod.
"Mrs. Jenkins," Detective Vance said quietly. "I wanted to update you in person. Judge Albright just signed the emergency protection order, as well as an immediate execution search warrant for Richard Vance’s residence."
I stood up, feeling my heart pound against my ribs. "Have you executed the warrant yet?"
"My team is at the property right now," Detective Vance revealed. "We caught Richard and Patricia completely off guard. When our officers knocked on the door, Richard was in the garage loading several large plastic storage bins into the trunk of his SUV."
My breath caught in my throat. "Storage bins? What was inside them?"
"Digital video recorders, external hard drives, and Maya’s confiscated personal belongings—including her laptop and her missing school iPad," Detective Vance said, a grim smile playing on his lips. "He was in the middle of attempting to destroy evidence when my officers served the warrant."
"Did you arrest him?" I asked desperately.
"Not yet," Detective Vance explained carefully. "Attempting to destroy property before a warrant is served is a tricky legal gray area unless we can prove he knew a search warrant was imminent. However, our tech department seized all the hardware on the spot. He and Patricia were formally served with the protection order and told that if they attempt to contact you or Maya by any means—direct or indirect—they will be immediately taken into custody."
"What about the camera footage?" I pressed. "Were you able to recover anything from the hard drives?"
"Our digital forensics unit is working on it right now," Detective Vance assured me. "Richard used an encrypted commercial security system—a brand called Fortress Vision. The hard drives were password protected, but our cyber team is bypassing the encryption as we speak. If there is footage of last night, or any previous incidents, we will have it within twenty-four hours."
Suddenly, Maya stirred in the bed behind me. Her eyes slowly opened, looking around the room before settling on the police officer's uniform. She shrank back into the pillows, a flicker of panic rising in her eyes.
"Mom?" she squeaked out, her voice fragile.
"It's okay, Maya," I rushed to her side, smoothing down her hair. "This is Detective Vance. He's a good man. He's here to help us make sure your dad never hurts you again."
Detective Vance walked over to the side of the bed, his tough posture softening instantly. He pulled a small silver badge out of his pocket and held it out so Maya could see it clearly.
"Hi, Maya," he said gently. "I know you've been through a horrific nightmare, and I know you're scared. But I promise you, you are completely safe now. Your father cannot come near this hospital, and he will never be allowed to take you to his house again."
Maya swallowed hard, tears glistening in her eyes. "Is... is Patricia going to jail?"
"We are doing everything in our power to make sure both of them face full justice," Detective Vance promised. "Maya, I know you're exhausted, but I need to ask you a very important question. When your father and Patricia locked you out last night, did either of them say anything about why they were taking your phone away?"
Maya lowered her gaze, her fingers twisting the edge of the hospital blanket. "Patricia... Patricia found a video on my phone."
I frowned, looking from Maya to Detective Vance. "A video? What kind of video?"
"A few weeks ago," Maya whispered, her voice trembling, "I was studying in my room. Patricia came in and started screaming at me because I hadn't folded the towels the 'right way.' She grabbed me by my shirt and shoved me against the bookshelf. My elbow broke the glass picture frame... that's how I got the bruise on my back."
I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand.
"I was so scared," Maya continued, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "So the next day, I set up my phone on my desk and hid it under a notebook with the camera recording. I wanted to record her so I could show you, Mom. I wanted to prove I wasn't making it up!"
Detective Vance leaned in closer, his expression intense. "Did you record her, Maya?"
"Yes," Maya sobbed. "I got a video of Patricia grabbing my arm, slapping my face, and telling me that I was a worthless piece of trash and that my father wished I was never born. I saved the video in a secret hidden album on my phone."
"And Patricia found it?" I asked, my voice shaking with righteous fury.
Maya nodded. "Yesterday afternoon, Patricia took my phone to check my browser history like she always does. She found the hidden folder. She showed it to Dad when he got home from work. She told him I was trying to 'blackmail' them and ruin their lives. Dad got so angry... he threw my phone against the wall, grabbed me by my jacket, and dragged me out to the front porch."
Detective Vance stood up straight, his face turning stone-cold. "She slammed her face, shoved her against a bookshelf, and confiscated the phone to hide the evidence of assault."
"Where is her phone now, Maya?" Detective Vance asked rapidly. "Did your father smash it completely, or did he keep it?"
"Dad put it in his leather briefcase," Maya said. "He said he was going to take it to his office IT guy the next morning to have the memory chip completely wiped and destroyed."
Detective Vance immediately pulled out his radio, keying the microphone on his shoulder. "Unit 4, this is Vance. Is the search team still at the primary suspect's residence?"
"Copy, Vance. We are wrapping up scene processing right now," a voice crackled through the speaker.
"Search Richard Vance’s leather briefcase immediately," Detective Vance commanded into the radio. "Look for a damaged smartphone—specifically a silver iPhone with a cracked screen. Secure it as primary digital evidence of a felony assault."
"Stand by..."
A long, agonizing thirty seconds passed in total silence. I held my breath, gripping Maya’s hand so tightly my knuckles turned white.
"Vance, this is Unit 4," the radio crackled back. "We found the briefcase in his home office. Inside was a silver iPhone with a shattered screen, wrapped in aluminum foil inside a padded envelope. Suspect was clearly preparing to dispose of it."
"Boom," Detective Vance muttered under his breath, a sharp, triumphant glint in his eyes. "Secure the envelope in an evidence bag. Bring it directly to the digital forensics lab. Tell them it's a Top Priority tag."

He turned back to face me and Maya, a look of absolute determination on his face.
"Mrs. Jenkins, Maya," Detective Vance said firmly. "That phone just transformed this case from a domestic parenting dispute into an airtight, slam-dunk prosecution for felony child abuse, evidence tampering, and domestic battery. Richard Vance thought he could hide behind his money. He just bought himself a one-way ticket to state prison."
