Part 4: The Flight and the Pursuit

"Should we stop her?" Dr. Sterling asked, pausing his conversation with the police dispatcher.

"No," I replied, pulling out my phone. "Let her run. She won't get far."

Before we had left the house that morning, I hadn't just changed the passwords to the bank accounts; I had also activated the real-time GPS tracking on the SUV via the vehicle’s integrated military-grade recovery system—a feature I had installed precisely for emergencies. Furthermore, I had already notified the military police liaison at my home base and the local district attorney’s office, providing them with a preliminary brief of the financial fraud.

"Are you okay, Mom?" I asked, kneeling beside her chair.

Clara took a deep breath, her hands still shaking slightly, but the relief on her face was palpable. "I'm better than I've been in months, Ethan. But she has the keys to the house. She knows where the physical bonds are kept in the basement safe."

"She can't open that safe, Mom. I changed the biometric lock codes from my phone at midnight," I said, showing her the confirmation screen. "Come on. Let's go meet the police at the house."

By the time Mom and I arrived back at our neighborhood in a taxi, the street was already alive with activity. Vanessa’s frantic escape had led her straight back to the house to gather whatever cash and valuables she could find before fleeing the state. But she hadn't anticipated the speed of the digital lockdown.

As our taxi pulled up, we saw Vanessa’s luxury SUV parked crookedly in the driveway, the driver’s side door flung wide open. Across the street, Mrs. Higgins and two other neighbors were watching with dropped jaws as two police cruisers pulled up to the curb, their red and blue lights painting the neighborhood houses.

Vanessa emerged from the front door, carrying two heavy designer suitcases and a lockbox. When she saw the police cars blocking the driveway, she froze on the porch—the very same porch where she had stood in her pristine white dress just sixteen hours earlier, pretending to be a loving, burdened wife.

"Vanessa Vance!" a police officer shouted over a loudspeaker. "Step away from the vehicle and place your hands on your head!"

Vanessa looked frantically around the yard, her eyes landing on the taxi. She saw me step out, followed by my mother, who was now walking tall, her posture proud and her mind perfectly intact.

"You did this!" Vanessa screamed across the lawn, her voice cracking with hysterical rage. "You ruined everything! She's a useless old woman! The money belonged to this family! It belonged to me!"

The neighbors gasped. Mrs. Higgins looked from Vanessa to my mother, the truth instantly shattering the months of lies Vanessa had carefully spun.

"Ma'am, step down from the porch immediately!" the officer ordered, drawing his taser as Vanessa made a sudden, desperate movement toward her purse.
