Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Morrison HealthThree days later, in the VIP penthouse suite of Morrison Memorial Hospital, the morning sun poured through massive glass windows overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago.

I sat propped up against a mountain of down pillows, sipping warm ginger tea. My fever had finally broken two nights ago, leaving me tired, but the IV lines were gone, and the heavy, crushing weight that had suffocated my chest for seven years was entirely absent.

My father sat in a leather armchair beside the bed, reading a financial report, though every few minutes he would look up to make sure I was still breathing.

“You’re spoiling me, Dad,” I smiled faintly, setting my teacup on the bedside table.

“You spent seven years being starved of basic human decency, Sam,” my father replied, setting his papers aside with a gentle smile. “I intend to spend the next seventy making up for it.”

A soft knock sounded at the door.

My father’s chief of security, a towering man named Miller, stepped inside, holding a thick leather portfolio.

“Mr. Morrison,” Miller said respectfully, nodding in my direction. “Good morning, Miss Morrison. The corporate and legal updates have arrived.”

“Give me the short version, Miller,” my father said, lacing his fingers together.

“The Whitmore family’s collapse is proceeding faster than anticipated,” Miller reported smoothly. “Within twenty-four hours of the incident, Morrison Global officially pulled out of the $50 million logistics acquisition. Following that public withdrawal, three major commercial banks have called in the Whitmores' secondary loans. Dupont and allied suppliers have cancelled their contracts.”

I listened quietly, feeling neither pity nor anger—only a profound, hollow numbness that was rapidly fading into relief.

“And Daniel?” I asked softly.

Miller opened the portfolio and pulled out a single sheet of stiff legal paper.

“Daniel Whitmore was served with divorce papers yesterday afternoon at his office,” Miller said. “Along with a formal restraining order keeping him, his mother, and his relatives at least five hundred yards away from you at all times. Furthermore, the local district prosecutor has officially opened a criminal investigation into Evelyn Whitmore for reckless endangerment and assault.”

My father leaned forward, his eyes softening as he looked at me. “Do you want to see them when they try to contact you, Sam? Because they’ve been calling my office twenty times an hour.”

I shook my head slowly, looking out the window at the endless expanse of the city.

“No, Dad,” I said firmly. “I spent seven years trying to earn their approval by making myself small. I’m never doing that again.”
