Chapter 5 - The Unraveling at the Dinner TableBy 7:00 PM that evening, Mark had returned to Chicago.

He didn't go to the apartment. He drove straight to Sarah’s place, standing on the front porch in the freezing cold for over an hour until I finally agreed to let him step inside the entryway—not to talk to me, but to look at his daughter.
When Mark saw Emma sitting on the living room rug, wearing her soft pink knit beanie to hide her shaved head, playing quietly with a set of wooden blocks while Sarah baked cookies in the kitchen, he broke down completely.
He fell to his knees on the hardwood, covering his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking with genuine, agonizing remorse.
“Elena… I swear to God, I didn't know,” Mark wept, his voice muffled by his palms. “Mom told me the kid was caught red-handed. She said there was no doubt. If I had known… if I had any idea she would touch her hair… I would have cut ties with them years ago.”
“Your words don't mean anything anymore, Mark,” I said, standing above him with my arms crossed over my chest, looking down not with anger, but with profound, irreversible emptiness. “Your mother and your sister knew the truth from the very beginning. They used Emma as a punching bag for their own amusement and class hatred. And your father sat there smoking a cigarette and watched it happen.”
I handed him my iPad.
“Watch this,” I instructed coldly.
Mark wiped his eyes, took the tablet with trembling hands, and pressed play on the video recording I had downloaded from the security camera earlier that afternoon.
For two agonizing minutes, Mark watched Lauren pull the gold charm bracelet from the sofa cushions. He listened to her confession about losing it during the wine tasting. He listened to Richard advise her to sweep it under the rug and let the storm blow over.
The silence in Sarah’s apartment was absolute, save for the hum of the refrigerator.
When the video ended, Mark’s face was deathly pale, drained of all color. He looked up at me like a man who had just watched his entire world implode.
“They… they framed a baby,” Mark whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, broken gasp. “My own family framed my daughter.”
“Not just framed her,” I corrected him softly. “Tortured her. And you are going to help me make sure they pay for every single second of it.”

“What do you want me to do?” Mark asked, looking up at me with eyes that finally held no more excuses, no more hesitation, and no more loyalty to the monsters who raised him.
“We are going to dinner,” I said, a dark, calculated smile touching the corners of my lips. “At their house. Tonight. And we are going to bring a very special guest.”
