Part 2: The Fortress of the Damned

The sharp, overwhelming scent of antiseptic, floor wax, and rubbing alcohol hit Ethan like a physical blow as he burst through the sliding glass doors of the St. Jude's Maternity Ward. His charcoal suit was disheveled, his hair wildly untamed, and his face pale with a terror he had never experienced in his cushioned, deeply privileged life. He marched up to the heavy, secure reception desk, slamming his palms against the laminate surface with a frantic, aggressive desperation.

"I need to see my wife," he gasped, his breath ragged and uneven. "Madison Walker. She was admitted two days ago. Emergency labor. I'm her husband, Ethan Walker. Give me her room number right now."

The receptionist, a seasoned night-shift nurse named Clara, slowly looked up from her dual computer screens. Her sharp eyes scanned Ethan’s expensive, rumpled clothing, instantly noting the faint scent of stale champagne and expensive cologne that still clung to him. Her expression hardened into a mask of professional, unyielding ice. She typed her fingers across the keyboard with agonizing, deliberate slowness, letting the silence stretch between them until it was unbearable.

"Mr. Walker," Clara said, her voice dangerously calm and flat. "There is a strict, maximum security flag placed on patient Madison Walker's file. No information is to be released to you under any circumstances."

"What do you mean 'no information'?" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking and rising into a sharp, arrogant register that drew the attention of everyone in the waiting room. "I am her husband! That is my child in there! You have no legal right to keep me from my family! Tell me where she is before I sue this entire hospital!"

"Actually, sir, we have every legal right," a deep, booming voice interrupted from directly behind him.

Ethan spun around, his chest heaving, to find himself staring at the Head of Security, Officer Marcus Vance—a towering, muscular man in a dark navy law enforcement uniform, accompanied by two other stern-faced security guards. Standing just behind them, emerging from the secure double doors of the ward, was Madison’s sister, Chloe. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from forty-eight hours of crying, but her posture was rigid, carrying a lethal, protective fury that Ethan had never seen in her before.

"You piece of absolute garbage," Chloe whispered, her voice shaking with rage as she stepped around the guard. "You actually showed up. Two days late. Tell me, Ethan, did Patricia enjoy her catering? Did she enjoy her sixty-fifth birthday while my sister was screaming and bleeding out on your kitchen floor?"

"Chloe, please," Ethan stammered, raising his hands defensively, his arrogance crumbling into a desperate plea. "I didn't know it was that serious! Madison always magnifies things. I thought it was just false labor or a minor scare. How is she? How is my baby? Just let me see them!"

"You don't get to ask about them anymore," Chloe spat, a hot tear spilling over her lashes as her voice dropped into a venomous whisper. "When the paramedics found her, her blood pressure was hitting stroke levels. The placenta had completely detached from the uterine wall. Do you even know what a placental abruption is, Ethan? It means our baby was suffocating in total darkness while you were pouring vintage champagne for your monster of a mother. It means Madison was alone, screaming into the floorboards, believing she was going to die because her husband told her to stop being dramatic."

"Oh my God," Ethan breathed, staggering backward until his spine hit the reception desk wall. His knees felt weak, and the room began to spin. "Is... are they...?"

"They are alive, no thanks to you," Chloe said, her voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register that chilled Ethan to the bone. "The doctors performed an emergency C-section within four minutes of her arrival. Madison almost went into cardiac arrest on the operating table. She needed three units of blood. And the entire time she was drifting in and out of consciousness, she wasn't calling for God—she was crying because her husband left her to die. She signed the restriction papers the moment she could hold a pen. You are barred from this hospital, Ethan. Get out."

Ethan tried to push past Chloe toward the doors, but Officer Marcus placed a heavy, unyielding hand on Ethan's shoulder, pinning him in place with terrifying force. "Mr. Walker, if you do not leave these premises immediately, I will have the county deputies arrest you for criminal trespass, domestic neglect interference, and disorderly conduct. Walk away."
