PART 2 — The Awakening and the Threat

The transition from the deep, drug-induced sleep to consciousness felt like climbing out of a deep well filled with lead. My throat was raw and burning from the breathing tube they had removed while I was under. My abdomen felt entirely numb, yet beneath the heavy block of anesthesia, a deep, structural ache signaled the violence my body had endured.

"Hannah? Hannah, look at me."

The voice was warm, cracking with an immense emotional weight. I forced my swollen eyelids open. The harsh surgical lights were gone, replaced by the soft, dim ambiance of a private recovery room. Sitting on the edge of my bed, his face haggard, covered in a thick layer of stubble, and his eyes bloodshot from crying, was Daniel.

He was still wearing his travel suit, the tie thrown onto a nearby chair. He looked as though he had aged ten years in the twenty-four hours it took him to fly across the Pacific Ocean.

"Daniel..." My voice was a broken whisper. I tried to sit up, but a sharp spike of pain in my lower stomach forced me back onto the pillows. "The babies... where are my babies?"

Daniel immediately took my hand, lifting it to his lips and kissing my knuckles over and over, his tears soaking my skin. "They're alive, Han. They're in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They're small—four pounds each—and they're on CPAP machines to help their lungs expand, but the doctors say they are fighters. A boy and a girl. They have your stubborn chin."

A massive wave of relief washed over me, so intense that I began to sob, the movement causing my surgical staples to pull painfully. Daniel leaned over, wrapping his arms around my shoulders with an incredible gentleness, holding me together as I cried.

"I'm so sorry, Hannah," he wept into my hair. "I should never have left you alone. I should have listened to you when you told me how greedy Vanessa was. I thought... I thought it was just petty jealousy. I never imagined they would be capable of something so demonic."

"It wasn't just Vanessa, Daniel," I said, my voice hardening as the fog of the drugs fully cleared, replaced by the cold, analytical mind of a forensic accountant. "Your mother was there. I heard her voice right before I passed out. She asked if it was done. They planned this together. They forged your signature on a withdrawal slip, and when that failed because of the biometric lock, Vanessa tried to force my thumb onto the screen. When that failed... she tried to destroy the evidence by destroying me."

Daniel’s face transformed, his jaw clenching so tightly that a muscle jumped in his cheek. The gentle husband I knew was gone, replaced by a man pushed past the brink of sanity by the betrayal of his own flesh and blood.

"Alan showed me the cloud backup of the security footage, Hannah," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "I saw what she did to you. I saw her hit you. I saw her drag you. I went to the police precinct straight from the airport. But my mother... my mother hired a high-priced criminal defense attorney before the ambulance even reached the hospital. They are currently at the station claiming that Vanessa acted in self-defense."

"Self-defense?" I let out a harsh, dry laugh. "I was eight months pregnant with twins, sitting in my own kitchen. How could I possibly pose a threat to an unaltered, athletic woman?"

"They’re claiming you had an emotional breakdown due to pregnancy hormones," Daniel explained, his fingers tightening around mine. "Carol told the police that you were unstable, that you attacked Vanessa because you were jealous of her boutique business, and that your water broke when Vanessa tried to push you away to protect herself. Because there is no visible external camera on the house, their lawyer is trying to suppress the pantry camera footage, claiming it violates their right to privacy as guests."

I looked toward the window, where the first light of dawn was breaking over the city. The battle lines weren't just drawn in the hospital room; they were drawn in the legal system. But they had forgotten one fundamental truth about me: before I was a mother, before I was a wife, I was an expert at deconstructing financial fraud and criminal cover-ups. They wanted a war? I would give them an absolute massacre.
