Chapter 6 - A NEW HARBOREighteen months later.

The summer sun was setting over Long Island Sound, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and violet.
On the manicured lawn of a stunning seaside estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, a loud, joyful laughter echoed across the water.
Evan—now six and a half years old, healthy, vibrant, his heart fully repaired by the country’s top pediatric surgeons—was sprinting across the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy. His cheeks were rosy, his breathing clear and strong.
Sitting in a comfortable reclining wheelchair on the stone terrace overlooking the lawn was Thomas Bell.
He looked years younger. Though he was still thin and required a portable oxygen unit, the medical intervention in Boston had restored his strength. He held a sketchbook in his lap, drawing the waves crashing against the seawall, enjoying the peaceful autumn breeze.
“Keep your knees up, Evan!” Thomas called out with a warm chuckle. “That dog’s gonna outrun you if you don't pick up the pace!”
“I’m gonna catch him, Dad!” Evan yelled back, his laughter floating up on the breeze.
Inside the estate’s sunlit kitchen, the french doors were open to the garden.
Declan Ward stood at the long marble counter, wearing a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Gone was the cold, intimidating mafia king who had ruled New York from a isolated tower. In his eyes was a quiet, deep peace that money could never buy.
He felt soft arms wrap around his waist from behind.
Lena rested her chin against his back, smelling of sea salt and sweet jasmine. Her ring finger sparkled with a simple, elegant diamond band—the same ring Declan had bought for her six years ago and kept in his desk drawer until the day they were married in the estate’s garden.
“What are you thinking about?” Lena asked softly, kissing his shoulder blade.
Declan turned around in her arms, wrapping his hands gently around her waist and pulling her close.
“I was thinking about the watch,” Declan murmured, smiling down at her.
Lena laughed softly, reaching up to adjust his collar. “I still can’t believe Evan found it. I had it buried so deep in that sewing kit.”
“He didn't find it,” Declan said, kissing the tip of her nose. “Fate found it. God got tired of watching us live in the dark.”
Out on the terrace, Thomas called out, “Hey! You two coming out here to watch the sunset or what?”
May you like
Declan and Lena smiled at each other. Declan caught her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers, and together they walked out onto the sunlit terrace to join their family.
The dark roads, the threats, and the painful lies of the past were gone, washed away like footprints in the sand. In their place remained a bond forged in trial, a healed boy’s heart, and a home built on truth, mercy, and unconditional love.
