Chapter 6 - Dawn Over Lake Michigan

Three months later, the morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant, fiery strokes of gold, amber, and violet.

On the wide limestone terrace of the Mercer estate, the air was crisp with the clean, refreshing chill of an early autumn morning. Down on the manicured lawn below, six-year-old Wyatt was running around in circles with a golden retriever puppy, his laughter echoing clearly across the water, full of health, energy, and unbothered childhood joy.

Savannah Cole stood by the stone balustrade, leaning against the railing, holding a mug of hot black coffee. Her hair was down, catching the morning breeze, her expression serene in a way she hadn't known was possible during all those years of struggling to survive on the margins of a hostile city.

Footsteps crunched softly behind her on the gravel path.

Colton stepped up beside her, holding his own mug of coffee. He wore a simple navy sweater instead of his usual tailored suit, looking relaxed in a way the billionaire crime lord rarely allowed himself to be.

“He’s gaining weight,” Colton noted quietly, watching his son chase the puppy across the grass. “The doctors ran his quarterly blood work yesterday. His insulin sensitivity is stabilizing. The pediatric research foundation you’re running has already published two breakthrough papers on alternative management for Type 1.”

Savannah smiled, taking a sip from her mug. “It turns out that when you actually fund real science instead of corporate profit margins, miracles tend to happen.”

Colton turned his head, looking at her profile in the golden morning light. “You know, when you slapped that glass out of my son’s hand at Obsidian, I thought you were just a desperate waitress making a reckless scene.”

“And instead, I turned out to be the best investment you ever made,” Savannah teased, turning her head to meet his gray eyes with a playful, confident spark.

Colton smiled, a warm, genuine expression that reached all the way to his eyes. He reached out, taking her coffee mug from her hand and setting it on the stone ledge alongside his own, before sliding his arms around her waist, pulling her softly against his chest.

“You were never an investment, Savannah,” Colton murmured, his voice dropping into a low, tender register that made her heart race. “You were the rescue mission I didn't know I needed.”

Savannah looked up into his face, feeling the solid, reassuring warmth of his embrace against the cool morning air. The shadows of her past—the foster homes, the corrupt academic boards, the endless nights of fear and scarcity—felt millions of miles away, dissolved into the past where they belonged.

She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and kissed him.

Down on the lawn, Wyatt laughed out loud as the golden retriever tackled him into the grass, while all across the sprawling, secure estate, the morning sun climbed higher into a brilliant, cloudless sky, shining down on a new empire built not on fear and betrayal, but on truth, resilience, and an unbreakable love.
