Chapter 6 - Spring in Cedar Rapids

Six months later, the bitter cold of December had yielded to the warm, vibrant green of a Midwestern spring.

The Oakridge Memorial Cemetery looked entirely different under the bright May sunshine, its rolling lawns dotted with blooming yellow daffodils and fresh clover.

Vivienne and I stood together near the northern perimeter, watching Gemma laugh as she walked arm-in-arm with an elderly woman wearing a simple, elegant knitted shawl—Maeve Higgins, who now lived in a comfortable cottage on the edge of the restored Sterling estate, surrounded by family, peace, and the closure of a fifty-year injustice.

My mother Florence was currently living in a quiet, secluded retirement facility upstate, visited occasionally by Paige, while Mason was serving a five-year federal sentence for corporate conspiracy—a sentence significantly reduced due to his full cooperation in dismantling Brenda’s criminal network, which ultimately resulted in Brenda receiving a twenty-five-year maximum sentence without parole.

The empire my father built had changed, but it hadn't fallen. It was stronger, cleaner, and built on truth rather than buried secrets.

Vivienne turned her head, looking up at me with a soft, gentle smile that made my heart feel as light as it had twenty-two years ago on our wedding day.

“You know,” she murmured, slipping her hand into mine, “if that strap hadn't snapped... we never would have found the truth.”

May you like

I squeezed her hand tightly, pulling her close against my side as we watched our daughter laugh in the sunlight.

“We found the truth, Viv,” I whispered, looking out over the bright green horizon. “And this time, nothing is ever going to bury us again.”
