Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushFriday morning arrived with the heavy, oppressive humidity of late summer. The executive boardroom on the top floor of the Summit Holdings tower was immaculate, gleaming with polished mahogany and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the sprawling Columbus skyline.

Richard stood at the head of the long conference table, looking exceptionally sharp in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair brushed to perfection. Seated around the table were our five primary board members—wealthy venture capitalists and long-time business partners—along with corporate legal counsel.

“Thank you all for being here on such short notice,” Richard began, his voice dripping with practiced, solemn gravitas. He paced slowly, pressing his hands against the polished wood. “As you know, our commercial real estate portfolio has faced unprecedented headwinds this past fiscal quarter. Due to macroeconomic pressures—and, frankly, outdated administrative oversight—Summit Holdings is currently facing a severe liquidity crisis.”

He paused, casting a theatrical, sorrowful glance toward the empty chair beside him—the chair he had deliberately barred me from occupying by claiming I was “unwell.”

“For months, I have tried to shield this company and my family from this harsh reality,” Richard continued, building his narrative with the skill of a seasoned actor. “My wife, Eleanor, has dedicated many years to our early foundational work, but her recent health struggles have made it impossible for her to adapt to modern fiscal realities. Therefore, for the survival of the enterprise, I am formally proposing an emergency restructuring plan. I will assume full operational control, buy out the remaining equity at a discounted valuation, and...”

“And liquidate the offshore accounts in Zurich, Richard?”

The crisp, clear voice echoed off the glass walls, cutting through his rehearsed monologue like a guillotine blade.

Silence descended upon the boardroom so heavy you could hear the hum of the air conditioning. Richard’s head snapped toward the double doors.

I walked into the boardroom wearing a sharp, tailored white blazer and dark trousers, my head held high. Behind me strode David, carrying a heavy leather briefcase, followed immediately by two federal marshals and corporate compliance investigators.

“Eleanor?” Richard stammered, his facade instantly cracking, the pale gray hue returning to his skin. “What... what is the meaning of this? You shouldn't be here. You’re supposed to be—restricted from these proceedings.”

“Restricted from my own company?” I asked calmly, pulling out the chair directly opposite him and sitting down with deliberate grace. “Richard, did you really think I wouldn't audit the books after finding a stranger's lingerie in your car?”

“This is insanity!” Richard shouted, slamming his palms onto the table, his composure entirely dissolved into panic. “Board members, ignore her! She is having a mental breakdown! Security, get her out of here!”

Not a single board member moved. The head of the audit committee, an elderly investor named Arthur Vance, slowly adjusted his glasses and looked at Richard with cold disgust. “Sit down, Richard. Let Mrs. Sterling speak.”

David stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and placing copies of the financial ledgers, offshore bank records, and forged signature documents directly in front of each board member.

“Mr. Sterling hasn't just mismanaged funds,” David announced clearly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “He has committed systematic corporate fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. He forged his business partner's and his wife's signatures to transfer over twelve million dollars in corporate assets into private, undisclosed offshore accounts. Furthermore, he conspired with my wife—his corporate secretary—to falsify financial distress reports in order to execute a fraudulent buyout.”

Richard’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally, but found only stony, unblinking stares.

“And as for your personal life, darling,” I added, offering him a sweet, venomous smile, “David and I thought you’d appreciate a family reunion. Shall we bring Chloe in from the lobby, or are you ready to sign the confession right now?”
