Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Frame-Up

The silence that followed the destruction was absolute, broken only by the sound of Jessica’s ragged breathing as she lay on the floor, her cheek swelling rapidly into a dark, angry welt where Sarah had struck her.

I released my grip on Daniel's arms. He didn't try to move toward Sarah this time. He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he picked up the red flash drive from the concrete. He stared at the serial number, his face losing what little color it had left.

"This... this is the decryption key for the northern route logistics," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. He looked up at Jessica, his expression shifting from confusion to a deep, sickening horror. "Jessica... you told me the key had been uploaded from Sarah's laptop in Stowe. You said you didn't have access to the physical drive."

"Daniel, listen to me," Jessica wheezed, trying to crawl backward away from Sarah, her hands scraping against the broken glass shards on the floor. "She... she must have planted that in my briefcase before we left the office. She’s trying to turn you against me so the audit fails."

"Shut up," I said, stepping forward and kicking the briefcase away from her reach. I reached down, scooped up a handful of the scattered papers, and handed them to Daniel. "Look at the dates, son. These aren't routing leaks from three days ago. These are asset transfer authorizations dated two months ago. Before the merger was even announced."

Daniel scrambled through the papers, his eyes scanning the corporate letterheads. "The escrow accounts... they aren't in Montreal. They’re registered to a holding company in the Caymans. J.V. Logistics Holdings." He looked at Jessica, his teeth grinding together so hard I could hear it from three feet away. "J.V. Jessica Vance. Your maiden name."

"She didn't just leak the data, Daniel," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a cold, clinical tone as she leaned against the side of the shipping desk, her hands resting protectively over her pregnant belly. "She used your personal security credentials to authorize a four-million-dollar short-term loan against our primary fleet assets. If the merger goes through tonight, that money disappears into the Cayman accounts, and you inherit the debt liability. You would have been bankrupt by the end of the month, and she would have been on a plane to Zurich."

"Why?" Daniel choked out, looking at the woman he had trusted above his own family. "I gave you a partnership share. I gave you the executive suite."

"Because you're a small-town boy playing with international money, Daniel," Jessica spat, suddenly dropping the victim act as she realized the game was entirely up. She sat up against the wall, wiping a smear of blood from her lip with the back of her hand, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "You inherited your grandfather’s valley routes and thought you were a tycoon. You were easy. You were so desperate to prove to your old man that you were a success that all I had to do was tell you someone was trying to steal from you, and you turned into a monster."

Daniel flinched, the words striking the exact center of his deepest insecurity. He turned his head slowly, looking at me, his eyes filled with a raw, desperate shame that I had seen in the mirror every morning for ten years.

"Father..." he whispered. "I... I thought..."

"You didn't think, Daniel," I said quietly, walking over to him and picking up the red flash drive from his hand. "You let the fear of losing your illusions make you blind to the people who were actually standing in the trenches with you. I made that mistake once. I let a liar tell me who the enemy was because it was easier than looking at the truth."

I turned my back on him, walking over to the main security panel near the shutter controls. I plugged my radio into the external line, bypassing Jessica's lock, and dialed the direct emergency number for the Vermont State Police.

"This is Thomas Vance at the northern logistics hub," I said into the receiver, my voice steady and iron-hard. "I have a commercial extraction site secured. We have an attempted corporate homicide and a major financial fraud suspect in custody. Send the transport units through the storm."
