Chapter 2 - Behind the Gold Frame

The north corridor was normally a quiet artery of Blackstone House, but tonight it echoed with the heavy, frantic thuds of Julian’s designer shoes against the hardwood. Isabella kept pace just a few steps behind him, her hands clasped tightly together, her breathing controlled.

Julian reached the heavy hunting painting first. He grabbed the ornate, gilded wooden frame with both hands, his knuckles turning white. He yanked upward, expecting it to be bolted to the drywall as it had been for decades.

“It won’t budge,” Julian panted, panic bleeding into his tone. “Isabella, how did you—”

“Press the brass clasp on the lower left corner,” Isabella instructed, stepping up beside him. “There’s a hidden spring mechanism.”

Julian’s thumb found the small, camouflaged latch. With a sharp metallic click, the massive painting swung inward on heavy, well-oiled hinges, revealing the dark, suffocating cavity behind the brickwork. A gust of stale, chilled air rushed out, carrying the faint, heartbreaking scent of dust, fear, and unwashed linen.

“Oliver?” Julian called out into the darkness, his voice cracking violently. He dropped to his knees, ignoring the expensive fabric of his tuxedo pants as they hit the filthy floorboards. “Oliver, buddy, can you hear Daddy?”

From the pitch-black depths of the narrow passage came a weak, trembling rustle. Then, a small, hollow voice emerged from the shadows.

“Dad?”

Julian lunged forward into the crawlspace, disappearing from view for a agonizing moment. Isabella stood guard at the threshold, her heart hammering against her ribs.

A sharp, ragged gasp echoed from the tunnel, followed by the sound of muffled, weeping sobs.

“Oh, my god. Oh, my sweet boy,” Julian choked out, his voice breaking into unrestrained tears.

A second later, Julian backed out of the narrow opening, cradling a painfully thin, trembling child against his chest. Oliver’s face was ghostly pale, his eyes wide and sunken, wrapped in an oversized pajama top that hung off his skeletal shoulders. The boy buried his face into his father’s neck, his small hands clutching the lapels of Julian’s tuxedo as if letting go meant falling back into the nightmare.

“I’ve got you. I’ve got you, Oliver. I am so sorry. Daddy is right here,” Julian repeated over and over, rocking his son gently against his heart as he stood up from the floor.

When Julian turned around and stepped back into the corridor, the harsh overhead light illuminated the horrifying reality of what had been hidden beneath his roof. Oliver’s dry lips, the empty plastic water bottle clutched in a corner of the tunnel, and the bruising on the boy's thin arms painted a picture of calculated, sadistic cruelty that no courtroom defense could ever erase.

Julian looked up at Isabella, his eyes red-rimmed, swimming with a mixture of infinite gratitude and cataclysmic rage.

“Call an ambulance,” Julian ordered, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. “And call the police. Tell them to lock down every exit in this house. No one leaves until my wife is in handcuffs.”
