Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Stairwell

The emergency room lights of Detroit General were blindingly white, a stark contrast to the gloom of Elmhurst Street. Leo was admitted immediately to pediatric intensive care, stabilized under the watchful eye of a medical team, while Lily was wrapped in warm blankets in a private consultation room.

Rachel refused to leave the children’s side. She sat across from Lily, who was slowly sipping a cup of warm apple juice provided by a compassionate nurse.

“Lily,” Rachel began softly, leaning forward. “Do you remember anything else about the man? What he looked like, what he wore?”

Lily shook her head, her dark curls brushing her collarbone. “He always wore a dark hoodie pulled down. But he had a silver ring on his thumb. A heavy one with a cross on it.”

Rachel jotted the detail down in her notebook. A thumb ring with a cross. Distinctive. In a city like Detroit, specific jewelry could often link a suspect to local pawn shops, low-level enforcers, or criminal syndicates operating in the precinct.

Meanwhile, back at the apartment complex, the police tape fluttered in the damp midnight wind. Officer Jenkins and a crime scene unit had secured Apartment 4B. The door, still bearing the splintered marks where the chair had been wedged beneath the knob, was now wide open to investigators.

Marcus Thorne, off duty but unable to sleep, drove his personal sedan to Elmhurst Street. He parked across the street from the crumbling complex, watching the flickering hallway lights cast eerie shadows through the cracked windows.

As Marcus stepped out of his car, a figure slinked away from the side entrance of the building—a man wearing a heavy dark hoodie, hurrying into the shadows of the alleyway.

“Hey! Stop right there!” Marcus shouted, breaking into a sprint.

The man bolted, his sneakers splashing loudly through the stagnant puddles of the alley. Marcus pursued him past overflowing dumpsters and rusted fire escapes, but the runner possessed local knowledge, ducking behind a row of abandoned garages and disappearing into the labyrinthine concrete maze behind Elmhurst.

Out of breath, Marcus stopped and cursed under his breath. But as he turned back toward the alley entrance, something glinted in the mud near a rusted chain-link fence.

Marcus knelt down and flickred his flashlight beam across the ground. Half-buried in the wet dirt was a heavy silver thumb ring, featuring an embossed cross.
