Chapter 5 - The Trap and the Rescue

Within twenty minutes, a tactical strike team coordinated by Marcus Thorne and led by Captain Harris surrounded the cavernous, corrugated-metal warehouse on Livernois Avenue.
The gray building sat silently beneath the heavy industrial smog, surrounded by rusted shipping containers and overgrown weeds.
Rachel crouched behind a tactical shield beside Officer Jenkins, her radio tuned to the encrypted channel.
“All units, breach on my mark,” Captain Harris commanded over the comms. “Priority is civilian rescue. Sarah Bradley is believed to be inside, restrained or being coerced.”
Marcus, stationed at the mobile command van two blocks away, bypassed the building’s local security grid, feeding live thermal imaging to the tactical team's HUDs.
“Thermal shows three heat signatures in the rear office,” Marcus reported. “One near the door, two seated near the center desk.”
“Understood. Breaching now!”
Bang!
The heavy iron side door of the warehouse blew inward in a cloud of dust and splintered wood.
“Police! Nobody move!”
Chaos erupted inside the dim, cavernous room. Viktor Vance, the man with the silver thumb ring, lunged toward a metal desk where a stack of property deeds lay open, reaching for a firearm tucked into his waistband.
“Drop the weapon! Federal and local warrant!” Rachel yelled, diving across the concrete floor and tackling Viktor before he could clear his holster.
The heavy man struggled violently, but two tactical officers swarmed him instantly, slamming him against the concrete and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists.
Across the room, the second enforcer threw his hands up in surrender as Officer Jenkins pinned him against a stack of wooden crates.
In the center of the room, tied securely to a wooden chair with thick zip-ties, sat Sarah Bradley. Her face was pale, bruised from a scuffle, and her eyes were bloodshot from days of terror and sleeplessness. But the moment she heard the commotion, she lifted her head.
Rachel rushed forward, pulling a tactical knife from her belt and slicing through the plastic restraints binding Sarah's wrists.
“Sarah! Sarah, can you hear me?” Rachel asked gently, supporting her as she slumped forward.
Sarah gasped for air, tears instantly flooding her eyes. “My... my babies... Lily... Leo... are they safe?”
May you like
“They’re safe, Sarah,” Rachel said, her own voice breaking with emotion. “They’re at the hospital. They’re warm, they’re fed, and Leo’s fever is gone. You’re safe now, too.”
Sarah buried her face in her hands, letting out a long, shuddering sob of pure, unadulterated relief as the nightmare finally broke.
