Chapter 3 - The Trap in the Marble Hall

Before Benji could fully process Lorenzo’s words, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite burst open with violent force.

Hugo Santillán marched into the room, flanked by three uniformed city police officers and Sterling’s head of corporate security, a burly, scarred man named Vargas.

"There she is!" Hugo shouted, pointing a finger directly at Irene. "Officers, arrest that woman immediately!"

Irene gasped, instinctively rushing forward to scoop Benji into her arms, pulling him back against her chest.

Lorenzo instantly rose to his feet, stepping directly between Irene and the police officers. The grief on his face vanished in a flash, replaced by a terrifying, murderous rage.

"Hugo, have you lost your mind?!" Lorenzo roared, his deep voice shaking the glass windows. "Step out of my office before I have security throw you off the balcony!"

"This isn't corporate business, Lorenzo!" Hugo sneered, his eyes glittering with cold malice. "This is a criminal matter! Ten minutes ago, corporate security conducted a routine sweep of the janitorial lockers following a tip. Inside Irene Ochoa's locker, we found ten million pesos in bearer bonds stolen from the vault on the 3rd floor!"

Irene’s eyes widened in absolute horror. "What?! No! That's a lie! I don't even have a key to the vault! I've never been on the 3rd floor!"

"The evidence is already secured, officers," Vargas, the corrupt head of security, announced smoothly, holding up an evidence bag containing a stack of bearer bonds. "Her access badge was logged at the 3rd-floor service door at 7:45 this morning. She used her child to distract the lobby staff while she smuggled the bonds out."

The three police officers unholstered their handcuffs, stepping toward Irene. "Señorita Ochoa, put the child down and place your hands behind your back."

"Don't you dare touch her!" Lorenzo snarled, taking a ferocious step toward the officers. "I am the CEO of this firm! Vargas works for me! I am telling you this is a blatant, orchestrated frame job!"

"Even a CEO cannot shield a thief from the law, Lorenzo," Hugo said with a smug, disgusting smile. "The police have a warrant. If you interfere, you will be arrested for obstructing justice and aiding a felon. Think of the stock price, nephew."

Hugo thought he had won. He had set the trap quickly, planting the stolen bonds in Irene's locker the moment he left Lorenzo’s office, intending to have her thrown into a high-security women's prison where she would be silenced forever before a paternity test could ever be ordered.

Benji began to cry, clinging to Irene’s neck. "Mommy! Mommy, I'm scared!"

"It's okay, mi amor, it's okay," Irene sobbed, clutching her son, her body shaking as the police officers closed in.

"Gabriel!" Lorenzo shouted.

Gabriel stepped out from the side room, holding a sleek black laptop. "I'm here, Mr. Santillán."

"Sync the penthouse main screen to the building’s master mainframe," Lorenzo ordered coldly, never taking his eyes off Hugo. "Override Vargas’s local security pass."

Vargas paled slightly. "Sir, the security network is under my private protocol—"

"I built this company's IT architecture, Vargas," Lorenzo spat. "Your private protocol is a joke to me."

With a few rapid taps on Gabriel’s laptop, the giant display wall behind Lorenzo flashed blue, then illuminated with crisp, high-definition video feeds from the 3rd-floor vault corridor, dated earlier that morning at 7:45 a.m.

"Look at the screen, officers," Lorenzo commanded sharply.

The police officers paused, looking up at the massive display.

On the screen, a man wearing a janitorial uniform was seen using a cloned keycard to open the vault door. The camera zoomed in on his face. It wasn't Irene. It was a male guard wearing Vargas’s security division badge.

The video then shifted to 8:10 a.m. in the basement locker room. The same guard was seen picking the lock on Irene’s personal locker, shoving the bearer bonds inside, and locking it back up before walking away.

The silence in the penthouse suite was terrifying.

Hugo’s smug smile completely dissolved into a sickly, pale sweat. Vargas took an instinctive step backward toward the exit.

"That's... that video is fabricated!" Vargas stammered frantically. "It's an AI manipulation!"

"That video is streamed directly from our secondary off-site encrypted server in Dallas," Lorenzo said softly, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper. "A server that neither you nor my uncle even knew existed."

Lorenzo turned to the three police officers, who were now staring at Hugo and Vargas with dark, suspicious eyes.

"Officers," Lorenzo declared, pointing at Hugo and Vargas. "You are standing in the presence of two men who have just committed corporate fraud, evidence tampering, filing a false police report, and conspiracy. I suggest you place those handcuffs on them immediately."

"Wait! You can't do this! I am a senior partner!" Hugo shrieked as the officers instantly tackled Vargas to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back, while the senior officer grabbed Hugo’s arm, snapping the steel cuffs over his wrist.

"Lorenzo! You fool!" Hugo screamed, thrashing against the officer's grip as he was pulled toward the doors. "She is a nobody! A peasant! She will ruin the Santillán name! You are throwing away your future for a maid and a bastard!"

Lorenzo walked straight up to Hugo. He leaned in, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying conviction that made Hugo’s blood run cold.

"His name is Benjamín Santillán," Lorenzo said, every word dripping with lethal pride. "He is my son. She is the woman I love. And as of this second, you are officially stripped of all executive authority, banished from this board, and ruined."

"Drag them out," Lorenzo commanded the officers.

Hugo was hauled out of the penthouse suite, screaming curses and threats that faded down the private elevator shaft until complete silence returned to the 40th floor.

Lorenzo turned around slowly.

Irene stood near the sofa, holding Benji tightly against her chest, tears streaming down her face.

Lorenzo walked over to them. He didn't hesitate this time. He reached out and gently wrapped his powerful arms around both of them, pulling Irene and little Benji into a fierce, protective embrace.

Irene let out a sob, resting her forehead against Lorenzo’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beating against her cheek. For five years, she had carried the weight of the world alone on her tired shoulders. Now, wrapped in Lorenzo’s arms, she felt a profound, overwhelming sense of safety she had thought was lost forever.

Benji looked up from between them, his small hands resting on Lorenzo’s lapels.

"Are you still a bad man?" Benji asked quietly, his big dark eyes searching Lorenzo’s face.

May you like

Lorenzo looked down at his son, wiping a tear from his cheek with his thumb, smiling with a tenderness that warmed the entire room.

"I was a lost man, Benji," Lorenzo whispered, kissing the boy's forehead softly. "But thanks to you... I'm never going to be a bad man again."
