Chapter 5 - The War for Sterling

At 11:30 p.m., heavy rain began to fall over Mexico City, slicking the glass facade of the Sterling Financial Group tower.
Inside the top-floor executive boardroom, twenty of the most powerful financial titans, corporate lawyers, and board members in Mexico sat around a thirty-foot obsidian table. The atmosphere was thick with tension, whispers, and anxiety.
Hugo Santillán sat near the far end of the table, flanked by three high-priced defense attorneys. Despite his recent arrest, Hugo had managed to secure temporary release, and he was determined to execute a final, ruthless corporate coup.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board!" Hugo announced loudly, standing up and slamming his hands onto the obsidian table. "Lorenzo has lost his mind! He had me wrongfully detained today over a ridiculous misunderstanding involving a cleaning lady! He is emotionally unstable, unfit to serve as CEO, and jeopardizing our stock price! I move for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Lorenzo Santillán from his post tonight!"
Several board members whispered among themselves, looking uncertain. Hugo’s allies on the board began to raise their hands in support.
BOOM!
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were kicked open.
Lorenzo Santillán stepped into the room. He was dressed in a sharp, tailored black tuxedo. His posture was commanding, regal, and terrifyingly calm. Walking beside him was Carlos Mendoza, the Chief Federal Prosecutor of Mexico, flanked by six armed federal agents.
The board members gasped, several standing up in shock.
Hugo’s face drained of all color. "Lorenzo... what is the meaning of bringing federal agents into a private board meeting?!"
Lorenzo walked slowly down the length of the obsidian table, taking his place at the head of the board. He didn't sit down. He leaned his hands on the table, staring down Hugo with eyes that burned like liquid steel.
"This is no longer a corporate board meeting, Hugo," Lorenzo declared, his deep voice echoing through the vast room. "This is a criminal execution."
Lorenzo gestured to Gabriel, who activated the central projector screen.
"For five years," Lorenzo announced to the board, "Hugo Santillán has operated a massive, illegal offshore embezzlement scheme right under your noses. He used shell companies in Panama and Zurich to siphon off over three hundred million dollars from Sterling’s primary investment funds."
Financial documents, bank ledgers, forged signatures, and wire transfer logs flashed across the giant screen, illuminating Hugo’s massive treason in undeniable detail.
"And to hide his crimes five years ago," Lorenzo continued, his voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying thunder, "Hugo orchestrated the forced disappearance of my partner, threatened her life, and faked legal records to keep me isolated and under his control."
The board members erupted into furious shouts!
"This is outrageous!" shouted a senior board member. "Hugo, you've been stealing from our primary funds?!"
"It's a lie! It's all fabricated by Lorenzo!" Hugo shrieked frantically, turning to his attorneys. "Do something! Invalidate those documents!"
Federal Prosecutor Carlos Mendoza stepped forward, pulling a thick, official federal arrest warrant from his briefcase.
"Hugo Santillán," Prosecutor Mendoza announced sternly. "By order of the Supreme Court of Mexico, you are under arrest for grand corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, extortion, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Two federal agents stepped up behind Hugo, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists.
"You can't do this to me!" Hugo screamed, thrashing wildly as he was yanked out of his leather executive chair. "Lorenzo! You ruinous bastard! I made you! Sterling belongs to me!"
Lorenzo stood motionless at the head of the table, watching his corrupt uncle struggle like a trapped animal.
"Sterling belongs to the people who build it, Hugo," Lorenzo said softly, looking around the room at the silent, stunned board members. "And my family will never suffer under your shadow again."
"Get him out of my sight," Lorenzo ordered.
Hugo was dragged down the central aisle of the boardroom, shouting hysterical curses until the double doors slammed shut behind him, sealing his fate forever.
Silence descended upon the boardroom.
The vice chairman of the board stood up slowly, clapping his hands. One by one, every board member in the room stood up, joining in a thunderous, unanimous standing ovation for Lorenzo Santillán.

Lorenzo bowed his head slightly, accepting their respect. But his heart was no longer in this room. His heart was back at his estate in San Ángel, where his true life was waiting for him.
He turned on his heel, leaving the boardroom behind, stepping out into the cool rain as his private Maybach prepared to take him home.
