Chapter 3 - The Cipher of Shadows

By 2:00 AM, the library had transformed into a command center.
High-resolution scans of the journal’s remaining eighty pages were projected onto giant digital screens lining the wall. Olivia sat on a high stool, holding her father’s worn leather notebook in her lap, pointing out structural anomalies in the manuscript’s layout.
"It’s not just a language," Olivia explained, tracing a line on a digital tablet linked to the main screen. "Look at the spacing between the Latin vowels. Salcedo used a musical notation key based on the Gregorian chants of the 13th century. If you read the text purely as words, it reads like a mundane inventory of grain shipments to Genoa. But if you map the vowel frequencies onto a four-line musical staff, it reveals geographical coordinates."
Dr. Finch let out a low gasp, clapping his hands to his mouth. "A steganographic music score hidden inside trade invoices! Of course! That’s why our computational linguistics software flagged the text as statistical noise!"
"The coordinates don't point to Europe," Dominic observed, zooming in on the mapped grid generated by Olivia’s musical translation. "They point to the Hudson River Valley."
"Specifically," Olivia added, scanning her father’s handwritten notes, "to the grounds of the former Dutch trading post established near West Point in 1628. Salcedo’s descendants brought the vault’s master key to the New World long before the American Revolution."
Suddenly, the red emergency lighting inside the Russo Tower flared, accompanied by a muted electronic alarm.
Dominic’s chief of security, a former marine named Vance, stepped into the room with his hand resting on the holstered sidearm beneath his jacket.
"Boss," Vance said quietly. "We have a security breach on the lower concourse. Three unmarked black SUVs just bypassed the parking perimeter. They’ve disabled the building's primary power grid and bypassed the private elevator codes."
"Hale," Dominic spat coldly. "He didn't even wait for sunrise."
"He knows we decoded the first layer," Finch said, trembling as he backed away from the glass windows. "He’s coming for the journal!"
"He’s not just coming for the journal," Olivia realized, standing up from her stool and packing her father’s notebook into her canvas backpack. "He knows the journal is useless without someone to read the musical cipher in real-time."
Dominic walked over to his desk, opened a concealed wall panel, and pulled out a encrypted hard drive containing the raw high-definition scans of the entire manuscript. He handed the drive to Olivia, then looked at Vance.
"Take the service elevator down to the subterranean garage," Dominic ordered Vance. "Get Miss Hart out of the city immediately. Head north toward the Hudson valley location."
"What about you, Dominic?" Olivia asked, panic fluttering in her chest.

"I’m going to stay right here and entertain Mr. Hale," Dominic replied with a dangerous, razor-thin smile, pulling a fountain pen from his pocket and placing the physical journal into his coat. "He thinks he’s playing a game of force. He forgets that I built this building."
Before Olivia could protest, Vance grabbed her arm gently, pulling her toward a hidden door hidden behind the mahogany bookshelves just as the heavy front doors of the library were blown off their hinges by a controlled breaching charge.
