Chapter 5 - The Gatekeeper's Test

Vance immediately moved to place himself between Hale’s men and Olivia, drawing his weapon, but Hale’s second-in-command fired a suppressive shot that ricocheted loudly off the granite wall, forcing Vance behind a rock ledge.

"Don't be stupid, Vance!" Hale barked. "You're outnumbered. I don't care about Dominic Russo, and I don't care about historical preservation. I care about the forty tons of Renaissance gold sitting behind that rock!"

Hale stepped toward Olivia, pointing his gun directly at her chest. "Open the gate, girl. Or I start by putting a bullet through your bodyguard’s shoulder."

Olivia stood her ground, her body shaking from the freezing cold and adrenaline, but her eyes remained cold and clear. She looked past Hale at the stone archway.

"You can't open it with force, Mr. Hale," Olivia said, her voice echoing off the rock face. "Look at the pressure seals along the door frame. The vault is counter-weighted with a 14th-century hydraulic siphon linked directly to the riverbed. If you attempt to blast that keystone with explosives or force the lock mechanically, the inner chamber will flood in four seconds, destroying every manuscript and drowning whatever is inside."

Hale paused, his eyes narrowing. "You're bluffing."

"Try it," Olivia challenged softly. "Look at the three keyholes beneath the glyph. They aren't iron keyholes. They're acoustic tubes."

Hale signaled his man to hold his fire. He stepped closer to the arch, shining his flashlight onto the keystone.

Sure enough, three small, circular openings sat beneath the carved symbol, lined with weathered bronze plates shaped like small whistles.

"It’s an acoustic lock," Olivia explained, taking a slow step forward. "My father studied these in Italy. The lock only disengages when three specific vocal frequencies are blown into those tubes simultaneously in the correct chord sequence. It was designed so that no single person could enter the vault alone without knowing the harmonic key."

"And you know the chord?" Hale demanded.

"I know the musical score hidden in the journal," Olivia replied. "You don't."

Before Hale could respond, a convoy of heavy headlights blinded the entire quarry from the upper ridge.

Engine roars echoed through the valley as three heavy security vehicles belonging to Dominic Russo tore through the wooden perimeter fence, accompanied by state police cruisers with sirens wailing through the night.

"Drop your weapons!" a megaphone echoed from the ridge. "State Police! You are surrounded!"

Panicking, Hale turned back to Olivia, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Blow the chord, girl! Now!"

He raised his gun, but before he could pull the trigger, Vance lunged from behind the rock, tackling Hale to the mud. The gun discharged wildly into the air as Dominic’s security forces swarmed the quarry floor, quickly disarming Hale’s remaining henchmen and throwing them to the ground in handcuffs.

Dominic Russo stepped out of the lead vehicle, wrapped in a heavy trench coat, stepping through the mud toward Olivia.

"Are you alright, Olivia?" Dominic asked, his voice filled with genuine concern.

Olivia nodded, wiping rain and mud from her face. "I'm okay. But the lock... the lock is real, Dominic. It’s right here."
